I liked Telegraph Hill better when I lived in the City - 1988-94. It was before the "dot-com boom" so there were still plenty of Italian-owned small businesses that gave the neighborhood real "character". Once the dot-commers moved in and drove real estate prices through the roof, the old-timers couldn't afford to stay. I remember with particular fondness a hardware store that probably dated from immediately after THE Earthquake that was a delight just to browse through. Family-run and they knew exactly what they had and could advise you what you needed. It's now a trendy dress shop that looks like every other trendy dress shop in the U. S.
