So when Emir Kusturica dreamed of his own city..

Any proud, self-respecting European citizen must have probably heard of Emir Kusturica, a celebrated Serbian film director who won two Palme d'Or's (so far) for his films, and who was head of the jury at Cannes film festival last year.

He got so sick of the whole political situation in the Balkans, he decided to start buildinging his own "fotress of solitude".

Here's how far he's gotten - its called "Mecavnik" but most call it "Drvengrad" (Wooden town), close to city of Uzice in western Serbia. He won the Philippe Rotthier European Architecture Award for this project on Mt. Zlatibor in 2005. The prize is awarded every three years by the Brussels Foundation for Architecture and is one of the most prestigious Belgian and European awards in this field.
