City Murder Rates

There have been 68 murders in San Francisco as of August 9th. In addition, there have been 3 justifiable homicides (one a self defense shooting, two more were police shootings), and at least a few "suspicious" deaths. The murder total is up from 52 at the same time last year, a 24% increase. It's also around 30% higher than the total for the same time in 2005

Oakland is at 79 murders, possibly 80 now, with a spate of 8 murders between August 2nd and 6th. It's at exactly the same number now as it was for the same time last year.

San Jose is at 20, I believe.

What are the numbers for your city?

Toronto averages 60-80 murders per year for 2.5 million people. So around 3.0/100,000, give or take. The suburbs have much lower rates - usually around 1.0/100,000.

chicago is flat with last years figures (through end of June). 201 murders so far.

overall crime is down 7.3%. One of the few big cities in the midwest with crime moving in the right direction.

20 so far this year for Austin. There were 5 or 6 in July alone, making that the deadliest month in like 15 years. The most recent just a few weeks ago involved a man getting stabbed outside an apartment complex in Northeast Austin.

Damn, so I posted this earlier, with 19, then earlier on the news they reported another one.

Mmm....I'd say nine homicides in the Syracuse are so far...which is about average for the city. So that's a little more than 6/100,000.

No. you can't compute the rate based on a year not yet finished. J Will's mention of 3/100,000 for a typical year in Toronto (it's actually closer to 2, by the way) is based on annual totals, not totals through early August.

NYC can expect, say, 450 this year when Dec 31 rolls around, a rate closer to 6 per 100,000. Excellent by US standards, horrible by Canadian standards, but a lot higher than "3.5 per 100,000."

I was calculating for the "year so far", considering most of everyone has been mentioning murders in the "year so far". But thanks or something.

Well, last year Sacramento(city) had 45 murders as of 8/16/06.
This year, we were at 23 in the county and 24 in the city as of 7/11/07.
There have only been 3 or 4 more each in the city and county (if that, in the city). So, murders are WAY down here! I'll try to find some updated numbers for the county for last year and for the city and county for this year.

I only have figures for Miami Dade County (pop. 2.5 million) and not the city, as of June 30th, 2007 there were 125 homicides or basically 10 per 100,000 people.

Out of the 125 murders 65 were young African American men under 30 and sadly the genocide continues.
