Bargoed: Gritty yet beautiful Welsh Valley town

Bargoed is situated in the Rhymney Valley in South Wales. The population of "Greater Bargoed" is 13,000.

The coal mine closed in the 1980s and the town declined. However, it retains some beautiful architecture and some unique independent retailers.

The town is on the brink of a council regeneration project after the opening last year of the Angel Way bypass.

To the Irish?

My Great-grandparents came to the US from near Cardiff (Glamorganshire) in the 19th century. I actually got to visit Wales when my US Navy ship pulled into Portsmouth and I took the train over to Cardiff. Gritty towns, but beautiful scenery. Thanks so much for this tour, hope to see more.
