The Rose City: Portland

After spending four days exploring Seattle earlier this spring (photo thread here), I hopped on Amtrak at Seattle’s King Street station and headed south to Portland. Despite the thread title, I didn't get any photos of roses. While I’d previously spent a very brief day & a half in Seattle in the late fall of 2006, I’d never been to Portland. Rather than taking the Cascades train, I actually took the Coast Starlight as the timing of departure was more convenient. While it was slightly slower than Cascades trains, it was still a worthwhile trip. I arrived in Portland early Sunday afternoon, quickly went to my hotel to drop my bags off, and proceeded to promptly start walking through downtown toward Northwest Portland.

Near Portland State University. I like this area with its many trees, the streetcar, and especially the presumably older highrises updated to reflect design aesthetics popular to the Pacific Northwest. I’d love to see some of Chicago’s old ugly lakefront highrises built in the 60s updated as well.

Making my way into Northwest Portland

Heading from Northwest Portland into the Pearl District. Uh oh, looks like someone wasn’t paying attention to the road while driving.

The sun finally made an off & on appearance on Tuesday, which was my last full day in Portland. Unfortunately it rained non-stop the previous day, which prevented me from being able to photograph areas east of the Willamette. I had planned on spending the entire day on that side of the river, but there wasn’t a dry moment from sunrise to sunset. Since I finally had some sunshine, I opted to walk around downtown and check out the South Waterfront.

Down in the South Waterfront area.

Onto the campus of Portland State University

I had pizza all three days in Portland… twice from Hotlips. It was pretty good!

The all day rain event on Monday put a damper on my intentions for a much more neighborhood intensive photo tour since it had been my intention to spend the entire day wandering around neighborhoods east of the Willamette. Hopefully I’ll be able to check out those areas, as well as North Portland, and some of the main suburbs connected by MAX light rail, whenever I’m able to make it back to Portland for another visit.

Very nice - I'll be visiting in September and your photos have given me some ideas of the spots I want to check out. Would you recommend hopping on the aerial tram? The shots of downtown look great from there.

Whoops. Sorry. Just noticed your question. I know you've already made your trip to Portland, but hopefully you did take a little trip up & down in the aerial tram. I enjoyed the views... especially from the top station where the views (and breeze) are very nice.

Bravo, great photos. It's my first time seeing Portland in such depth. Really impressed me with the nice modern buildings along with the well maintaind historical downtown core and houses.

This is one of my favorite cities. It's a big city version of my hometown. If I relocate again, I would love to move to Portland, Seattle or Vancouver (B.C.). I love this area. I also love rainy weather. The Pacific Northwest is usually sunny for me though. Someone in Seattle told me the cold weather months are a rainy season and it doesn't rain as much during the warmer months. The area southwest of Asheville is an actual rain forest and I wasn't too far away from it when I was in North Carolina.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Portland is by far my favorite American city. While the rest of the country was being retarded in terms of planning, Portland (with some help from the Governor of Oregon in the 1970s) has been doing it right with urban growth boundries, density, transit and overall awesomeness. God I love this city.

Great pictures, you really captured Downtown and NW PDX quite well, I'm a little disappointed that you didn't get to take pictures of the inner east side, which in my opinion, is a highly underrated part of the city and often overlooked and overshadowed by it's counterpart accross the Willamette.

There's nothing that I don't not not like about Portland...

One of the bestest cities in N Am right now. Totally awesome in every way.

Thanks for the epic tour...but I still want more!

Portland has so much architectural character! I think the Ex-Cali Victorians and Hippies found a welcome in PDX.

Now that is my kind of tour. The gray, dreary skies almost highlight even more how beautiful the city is. Jealous! Great photos, thanks!

very nice man, you saw a lot. next time you're in town, if you're still hungry for pizza, go out of your way to get to apizza scholls in southeast -- it's the best pizza i've ever had, and i lived on the east coast for 33 years.
