In fact, both Spain and France were ruled by the same family (the Bourbon dynasty) back then anyway. The linguistic aspect would be significant if only they still spoke French in Missouri like some do in Louisiana, as part of their local original culture. Being bilingual is an obvious plus.
Soulard probably didn't believe in the ideals of the Republic and remained faithful to the Bourbon monarchs. He would have met that kind of grim device during the revolutionary terror in France, for his political opinion.

Always nice to see the historic feeling over there. Of course, I wish you guys made sure little kids can speak French. Really, it's not so hard to learn for them flexible kids.
