Question What are your favourite architectural feature and pet peeve?

Mine are simple enough.

My favourite architectural feature is lots of windows and glass - or, specifically, a blend of historic, European-style architecture and cool blue glass modernity.

My biggest architectural pet peeve (are/is?) tall buildings (4+ floors in this case) that have no windows on one or more sides.

What are yours?

BTW, every time I read one of your posts, I end up singing, "At the Chadillac ranch..." in my head. And I'm only 30.

I like dentils, not enough dentils on buildings anymore.

Haha, there are no good photos of either building to be found anywhere online. But every time I see the Radisson I think "I drew that!".

I haven't drawn in so long.

Great drawing.

Also, I want to steal your description (wiggle yer pig) and change mine to "Beatify and eventually canonize your Johns."

Favourite: Stone setbacks

Least favourite: I'd have to agree with blank slabs, or dirty concrete cladding

^ Those buildings with stone setbacks are incredible, Architect. I especially love the American Radiator Building. It's like... Spanish ornaments on American bulk. Such a beautiful design, colouring, etc.

One more peeve worth mentioning: garages as the most prominent feature of a home.

I like setbacks on very tall buildings and roofs that are'nt flat. I do like most of the residential buildings In TO and Vancouver. Pet Peeves: Twins and high-rises that are far too bulky/wide.

Tapered rooftops are indeed beautiful. I wonder if they would look nice on a mid-rise building?

(BTW, is my grammar right in the title of this thread? Are and is both sound wrong to me...)

Are is correct if you pluralize features and pet peeves; otherwise is would be used if they are kept singular

Thank you!

An example of my main pet peeve - blank walls. The Fortis Building (white, centre) in downtown St. John's:

And another: surface parking lots. This one is only this prominent from this particular vantage point, but still... broke my heart that it had to be in the panorama...

Favourite: use of warm, high quality materials (metal, stone, granite, wood, etc.)
Peeve: use of cold, cheap materials (green/blue glass, crap fenestration, plastic, pre-cast)
