Now that the tunnel boring machines have completed their journeys, crews are excavating connections between the two tunnels, called cross passages.

This one is between GNW-Emily Carr Station and Mount Pleasant Station, and crews have reached halfway to the other side.

Ouch. That's a solid three years and change away. Wasn't it originally supposed to open next year? What happened?

There was the concrete strike, but that lasted a few months.

Originally, opening was for the last week of 2025 so it's about a 22 month delay.

Start of tunneling was delayed by 3 months but I don’t believe tunneling was directly the main cause of the delays, the schedule as of early 2021 shows “tunnels ready for systems” in April 2024. We don’t seem to be far off that milestone.

If I had to guess, they believed they could do a lot more station box construction before the TBMs finished than what has taken place; or simply that every step of station construction is taking far longer than anticipated.

This is all being pinned on a cumulative delay of ~6 months between the concrete strike and the delayed excavation at Arbutus station. Project schedulers really must have undershot the estimates on the road deck construction for this too, guess that hasn't been tried before so it was a shot in the dark for them. Hopefully there's lessons learned here and the road deck construction for the UBC extension (if they use the same approach) results in a more accurate initial estimate.

The road deck construction seemed to take forever and anecdotally when I was living in Kits it seemed that the deck around Maple/Cypress was months behind the implementation schedule I was reading about online.

For what it's worth, the Broadway Extension being delayed doesn't necessarily have anything to do with beginning UBCx.

They knew this since late last year.. I mentioned that this would become public but surprised they waited so long to announce.
