I was in your city for the first time about two weeks ago. Stunning. I hesitate to show my pics because you 'Burghers seem to be such good photographers!

....what are those red cable like cars on the hillside? Seems like such a short distance to serve a real purpose.

What an incredible setting for a city. To me it ranks right up there with San Francisco for a setting, although in a different way, of course.

They're used for wig storage.

Well, it's a 400 foot drop from the top to the bottom. When these were built, (1870's) there was a large industrial complex, and a very vile residential area located at the foot of this hill. The incline opened up the areas at the top of the hill and beyond, for residential development. There were once 17 (I believe) inclines in the city. Only two are left, and they serve largely as tourist attractions (especially the on shown, which is the Duquesne Incline).

I used a long lens on those pics, which tends to compress and make the distance look shorter. This pic from the incline's home page Duquesne Incline gives a better idea of how high up it goes.

I don't think you want to make that walk.

It is very highly recommended if you visit the Burgh. My ex-girlfriend and I were on the Duquesne incline one Saturday night when the Patriots were in town for a playoff game. There were two drunk patriots fans from Boston in the same car with us. When we got about ½ way up, the one shouts, “Holy F*ckin sh*t, Pittsburgh is F*ckin awesome!”
