Great area of Pittsburgh - it always reminded me of Cincinnati's Mount Lookout mashed (aka more compact and the residential and commercial more intertwined) with the pricier area of Walnut Hills.

It's about a 5-10 minute walk from Chatham University, a small, women's lib arts school. Carnegie Mellon, Pitt, and Carlow are about 1.5 miles down Forbes Ave so it's a popular neighborhood for students.

Cool place and cool tour, JackStraw. Keep up the tours.

^no I haven't. I still have so many things that I have to try in Squirrel Hill. There is seriously so many delis and other restaurants that it would take awhile to get to them all. My brother is coming home from out west soon, and he loves Thai. I am planning there or that place in Shadyside. I can't remember what the name is, but they have a sign out front that states it is voted one of the top ten in the nation.

I've been intrigued by Silk Elephant in Squirrel Hill... which is a thai tapas and wine bar... someday I hope to have an occassion that necessitates such a splurge

In Bloomfield, Thai Cuisine and Thai Gourmet fulfill my weekly thai requirements.

Good observation, MayDay...I'd throw Hyde Park into the mix as well.

Great to see some wonderful photos of my home. I agree, when I moved back last year there was no question as to which neighborhood I would live in. Squirrel Hill is the perfect mix...its got a little high end to it but is diverse enough to serve everyone well. Its on the upper-middle end of Pittsburgh home prices but is still a real bargain.

Awesome pics, thanks for bringing back some fond memories!

The views from Schenley Park are simply stunning.

Nice pictures, JackStraw. If you ever get the urge to take more
pictures for a "part 2" here are a couple of ideas:
It would be interesting to see some of the larger properties off of
Woodland Road (the real estate section of the saturday PG shows that
homes there often sell for big $$$).

The Bennington/Inverness area is very nice. It would be especially
good for photos because somehow the folks living there managed to get
all their services buried underground so there are no ugly telephone
polls/power wires to mar the view. (How did they do that?)

Shots of Beechwood Blvd (where it is wide with the bike lanes and has
lots of big houses set well back off the road) would be interesting.

There is an interesting modern house at 5555 Northumberland (1997
vintage, according to the county real estate web site, which has a
very bad photo of it). To its right is an older house that is owned
by CMU (that's where the president of CMU lives). Across the street
from that is where that personal injury lawyer who has billboards all
over the place lives (Edgar Snyder).

I'm afraid I don't get the STL posters' excitement over Kazanskys.
You guys got all the attractions in the the Delmar/U-City look area...
would be happy to trade you Kazanskys for Joe Edwards and BBH, were it
possible.

I hope you and Evergrey have been to both Bangkok Balcony and Silk
Elephant by now, they are both very nice (owned by the same people,
too). See: http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/06215/710624-242.stm
PGH has an abundance of Thai places to choose from...

Thanks CDC. I have been out and I will take your considerations and try to get pictures of what you mentioned below.

I moved into Squirrel Hill about a month and a half ago. I am finding streets and buildings after I took these. I have been talking walks this weekend and after work getting more photos of the blooming trees and flowers in Squirrel Hill, Shadyside, Friendship, Bloomfield, and Oakland. I will adventually have a thread of my spring time photos soon. I am trying to take a months worth of photos and pick and choose which ones I want rather then taking a days worth and forcing them all in a photo thread.

Oh yeah, I been to Chatam university many times before, but on Saturday I walked down Murray Hill avenue behind it. Holy shit!

Is Woodland Road the road heading into Chatham's campus? It's a very interesting mix of old and "ultra-modern" mansions back in that secluded area.

Bennington/Inverness is gorgeous and super-posh. The tree canopy there is one of the best in Pittsburgh... very impressive.

Beechwood Blvd. is fantastic. Very fun road to drive along since it's so curvy.

I actually took photos of Woodland, Bennington/Inverness and Beechwood last summer... but my photos mysteriously disappeared from my computer... bah.

Lots of familiar sights here! I used to hang out at 61c Cafe a lot when I lived in Pittsburgh!
Also, I present to you, a conversation I once had about this building while sitting at the bus stop across the street, stoned:

Friend: Oh cool, that clock has the hebrew symbols for the numbers.
Me: Yeah, it's the JCC, I think. The clock tells you what time it is in Israel.
Friend: No, that's what time it is here. The numbers are just in Hebrew.
(I glance at my watch)
Me: Oh. Oh yeah.
Friend: Did you really think that?
Silence

And that's why I rarely smoke weed anymore.

Yes, I think so. It is one street east of Murray Hill Ave. It goes
from Wilkins north to 5th Ave. and has a couple of branches. I
haven't had the chance to walk over there, but I've also heard that it
is a very interesting mix, like you said.
