Sydney, NS (~100 photos)

Populations (2006):
City: 102,250 (Regional Municipality)
Urban Areas: Sydney Central - 33,012, Glace Bay - 19,968, North Sydney+Sydney Mines - 15,500, New Waterford - 9,661
"Metro": 105,928
Largest population centre on Cape Breton Island. Regional Municipality consists of 2nd, 5th, 6th, and 8th largest Urban Areas in Nova Scotia, plus a huge landmass of rural land and smaller landmass of suburban sprawl that doesn't make it into the urban area criteria. Under old municipal boundaries, Sydney was 3rd largest city in NS behind Halifax and Dartmouth. 2nd largest metro in Nova Scotia and 5th largest in the Atlantic Provinces.

Other threads in this series:
L'Ardoise, NS
Fredericton, NB
Lake Louise, AB
Banff, AB

Most of these were done on a construction update excursion, so this is by no means a thorough representation.

Membertou (Native Reserve)

Skyline, click for original size...warning - huge (that goes for all panos)!

Foreground - part of Whitney Pier, Across the harbour - Sydport

Foreground - part of Whitney Pier, Dirt - former steel plant, Background - suburb of Westmount.

SPAR Rd Power Centre Expansion

Mayflower Mall (the curved building makes the mall larger than it looks from the outside, though still small by most not-small-town standards)

Grand Lake Rd (suburb) Volunteer Fire Dept, building completed in 2007 or so.

SPAR Rd Power Centre will connect to Mayflower Mall at these traffic lights (both owned by the same company).

Now to Downtown...
Cruise Terminal

There was a proposal for this land, though it's gone stale due to NIMBYs complaining about "views" (blocked by a 7-storey building in a hilly city)

Sydport

Boardwalk Skyline (Senior's Residence getting a facelift)

New office building on the site of an old theatre

New Lawton's...demolished almost a whole block for their parking lot. This street (George St, front of building - not in picture) is the "suburban street of downtown", so it fits right in.

YMCA Renovations

with much more work to be done, expected completion 2010.

Supper time...

and HOT (humidex was ~36 this day)

Wentworth Park, lower pond renovations done

upper pond renovations underway

There's a bandshell under that tarp

King's Rd, realigned and widened 2006.

King's Rd turning into Esplanade entering downtown

Esplanade

You can try to hide it, but I'll find it

Prime lot away from NIMBYs "views"

Sydney Harbour toward Sydney River

the Boardwalk will soon be extended beyond that fence to meet with Wentworth Park

Cabot House...still our tallest, still outside downtown

Moxham Apartments (there used to be a castle on this property, but it burned down long before I was born).

Sydport again

Future site of container terminal...meant to handle Post-Panamax traffic.

The harbour curving towards its mouth

Old Government Wharf

New Government Wharf (and Cruise Terminal)

Old SYSCO (steel mill) crane in the background

Delta

I was concerned when I saw the baby blue...the relieved when I realised it was just insulation.

Sydney River suburb business section

Sydney River...the waterway

Marina at Royal Cape Breton Yacht Club, downtown

Cape Breton Regional Municipality (green), Nova Scotia, Canada

You used to be able to swim here (again, before I was born). Soon, you will be able to again.

Skyline (pano alert!)

Clearing for the extension of the Boardwalk

New subdivision in Westmount

Cape Breton Regional Hospital

Hwy-125 twinning, Balls Creek to Sydport Access Rd (AADT 12,600-13,800)

Hwy-125 twinning, Sydport Access Rd to Coxheath Rd (AADT 12,100-16,220)

Hwy-125, Alexandra St West to Sydney River, twinning announced but yet to be started (AADT 15,600-24,000)

Hwy-125, Alexandra St East to Grand Lake Rd, twinning announced but yet to be started (AADT 14,200-26,800)

Promised Thundertubs I'd get pictures of these a while back...former company houses on Victoria Rd heading into Whitney Pier.

Scenery at Victoria Mines (just north of Sydney)

South Bar sandbar

Don't go too close to the edge, the overhang is deceiving.

recent rock fall, at least it was a small one.

Cape Breton Highlands in the hazy distance

Newfoundland Ferry coming back to North Sydney (note: not Sydney)

This is North Sydney

And its neighbour Sydney Mines (sorry, light was bad due to the time of day)

Fort Petrie at southern limit of New Victoria (suburb of New Waterford) - World War I and II fort guarding Sydney Harbour (one of several, last one left in good condition).

New Waterford lighthouse

New Victoria cliffs

Headed back to L'Ardoise, Rte 4 realignment at Ben Eion (shortly past the far southern suburbs of Sydney)

Headed back to Sydney later to catch our flight out, another hot day (this was at around 6:30pm, humidex was ~37)
