You're not alone on that one at *all* -- I walked past it recently and was amazed... I don't know how they'll be used, but they look like they have just enough room for a plastic chair and a firm grip on the handrails to keep from falling off.

Or are they going to be glass-enclosed sunrooms??

Unfortunately, it looks as though the pairs of indentations that were to run up and down Env's east and west facades have been scrapped.

The four double height painted support columns visible in the pic—that is the indentation on the western face. Notice the floor slab is also pulled back from the others above and below.

You took the words right out of my mouth. It's almost too difficult to think of what this view *could* look like with Waterview.

Nice shot Hydrogen, but the aspect ratio is too wide on the image as displayed here. 77 West Wacker looks fat as well as dowdy. It needs to be about 15 percent skinnier. When you correct perspective in Photoshop it's easy to have this happen unless you drag the bottom out and drag the top in to make sure the middle handles match up with the original width.

I was just out to dinner with a friend in Edgewater and he brought up the condo tower that is proposed for the empty lot near the church on Sheridan, The Andrew I believe? I was wondering if there is any new news about it? JUst saw a proposal of what it would look like and I really like it, almost a miniature Trump Tower on the northside.

If the indents you're talking about are of the recessed balconies, I'm pretty sure they're keeping them in. If you take a look at the picture of the west side, you'll see spots that aren't painted...that must be it.

Thanks. I edited the photo and adjusted the perspective. Hopefully, it's closer to reality.

^ love that 3rd photo

Hey everyone, I don't know if this has been on the forums yet, but one of our photographer heroes - the Trump crane operator Ken Derry - has put out a book compiling his photos. He's selling it on his website kenderry.com. It's also apparently for sale in the Aqua coffee shop.

(No I am not plugging for him and don't know him - I just have raw enthusiasm for the way he has documented the city's history!)

I took this as the recessed balconies that go all the way up the sides...which as far as I know haven't been scrapped and are to be where the unpainted squares are going up the sides in the West facing picture up above.

You said: "The four double height painted support columns visible in the pic—that is the indentation on the western face. Notice the floor slab is also pulled back from the others above and below."

I understand exactly what you're talking about but what I'm saying is totally different.

Yeah, they will be enclosed in glass. They're like "view boxes" that allow somebody standing there to get a 180-degree view (or larger, depending on the surroundings). The ones facing westward will be quite nice, but the ones facing east will be dominated by a view of 350 North LaSalle's party wall...

And no, the indentations haven't been scrapped. VDT has actually been rather clever, working off of a basic stack of rectangular floorplates and shifting the glass inwards at places to create balcony spaces and define the exterior form. This saves a lot of money, since almost all the floor slabs are identical.

^ beautiful shot - including 600's illuminated parking garage.

one caption comment - The Streeter comes first, and then Streeter Place is to its right. Also that's a decent cameo by Parkview's crown too.

I agree, its going to create quite an interesting building with very little additional costs. However, they have been architecturally dishonest in some aspects of this clever trick. For example, the horizontal indents where the render showed exposed columns make the same mistake as the fake columns near the base of Legacy. They have created fake columns on the outside of the facade which are noticeably not a part of the structure. This I feel detracts from what is really a very clean, simple, and honest design. They have created these faux columns simply because the locations of the real columns weren't convenient. That an architect would fake exposed structural members is almost to the point where the style of structural expressionism has become another design set devoid of any philosophical underpinnings. Those columns are no better than the fake pillars on neo-classical buildings.

If you have a comment on a topic other than Chicago highrise development, then don't post it in this thread.
