The Berg: The biggest artificial mountain in the world

Quote:
German architect Jakob Tigges has projected a new and visionary landmark in Berlin. He plans to build a mountain of 1,000 meters high called “The Berg”, which would become a never-before-seen tourist destination in the German capital city. Seen at Plataforma Arquitectura. More images and description after the break.

The objective is to create a natural habitat for the mountain’s wildlife and at the same time, become a recreation space for everyone in the city. “The Berg” would take the place of the Tempelhof Airport, a space currently under discussion. Surprisingly, there’s a big group supporting “The Berg” and people are pressing to get the approval and financing of the project.

Why not??! I think it's great! Unique, inventive way of replacing the old airport and essentially giving it back to the natural world - an instant, 'natural' landmark - sometimes romanticism should be override pragmatism and I think it's a bold and lovely gesture.

Of what real purpose does something like this truly serve? Just a vision to me.

Cool? Would this count as a skyscraper?

It's cool though. They should have a zoo or something... And they're gonna have to find a way of making sure the soil stays put. I don't think many people would be happy if an "engineering miscalculation" ever occurred on this mountain.

the hell??

placing the mountain to the side of the city would be dishonest to the geography and geology of the region. Also what region in Germany is willing to lend its soil and rock to Berlin and live with large pits in the ground?

First of all, it could never look like that because it wouldn't be built with impossibly large blocks of granite, it would be built with gravel.

Second, this is retarded. Even with today's technology, this would take longer and more labor than the pyramids.

I think it would be better to make it hollow on the inside to both accommodate some sort of facilities and conserve resources.

I thought we weren't supposed to post visions in this section.

How much would this cost?

Well there's a drive and support to try and make this one become a reality. If it doesn't make it then of course it's a vision or never built.

Those perfectionist can-do Germans! Now they want to recreate an astonishing work of nature? With what money? they should know that the only people that could afford to do something this absurd are the Chinese! If this was 2 years ago, I'd throw the Emirates in there too.

Talk about making a mountain out of a molehill.

The Berg - would it be possible?

There are some plans to build on the area of former Tempelhof airport to built
a 1000 metres high artificial mountain, which should look like a real mountain in the Alpes.

Do you think it is possible? There are some remarkable artificial mountains resulting from mining
in Germany, but these mountains have a regular inclination and no rock walls. Of course one can built
such a structure of concrete, but would it be very well possible to install stable inclined earthed areas? One may
not forget that on natural mountains especially in high mountainous area falling rocks and landslides are common,
resulting in problems for the areas at the foot of the mountain. I believe these things nobody in a large city wants!

Existing artificials mountains in Germany
