Cambie Bridge Construction Booklet (CoV 1985)

Interesting City of Vancouver booklet on the construction of the Cambie Street Bridge.
- from the days (1985) before segmental girder construction was adopted locally as the preferred method of construction for elevated structures.

Very neat find.

It's amazing that the second Cambie Bridge, officially the Connaught Bridge, saw daily use by horse-drawn vehicles right through to the late 1950s. Plus it kept catching fire(!), which was not an uncommon problem in Vancouver; the first two Granville Street Bridges were also damaged by fire that roared up from Granville Island.

An interesting tidbit - the plebiscite was held on March 18, 1984. But some of the piers for the new bridge on the south-west quadrant, in the vicinity of Leg-In-Boot-Square, were already constructed circa 1982.

No one knew about this matter until some reporter began to ask questions. Then mayor Harcourt down-played the significance of those new piers but it was obvious that design had commenced considerably prior to what is stated in this article.
