Not exactly 10086 Sunset Boulevard, but somehow familiar.... Per the

another fallen actress from an earlier period with a noir connection to sunset boulevard as well........

Marie Prevost

Source: Wikipedia

As Norma Desmond waxes poetic about her days in the mack sennet bathing beauties, she muses on how marie prevost always stepped on her feet.

Marie as a Sennet bathing beauty

Source: She Blogged by Night

but of course she is most famous for this;

She was a winner

That became a doggie's dinner.

She never meant that much to me.

Oh, poor Marie.

Nick Lowe's misspelled homage to her, (the song is titled Marie Provost)

On January 21, 1937, at the age of 38, Prevost died from heart failure brought on by acute alcoholism and malnutrition. Her body was not discovered until January 23, after neighbors complained about her dog's incessant barking. A bellboy, who ignored the note Prevost posted on the door asking that no one knock on the door more than once, finally forced the door open. Prevost was found lying face down on her bed, her legs marked with tiny bites. Prevost's pet dachshund, Maxie, had nipped at her legs in an attempt to wake her up.

Her funeral (which was paid for by Joan Crawford) at the Hollywood Memorial Cemetery was attended by Crawford, Clark Gable, Wallace Beery, and Barbara Stanwyck among others.

In February 1937, it was discovered that Prevost's estate was valued at only $300 prompting the Hollywood community to create the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital to provide medical care for employees of the television and motion picture industry.

For her contribution to the motion picture industry, Marie Prevost has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6201 Hollywood Boulevard.

the building where she and her dachshund resided was the aftonian located at 6230 Afton Place

Even today, on the Metro Gold Line, sometimes they do track maintenance where both northbound and southbound trains use one track; it's a hassle when that happens, it usually adds a delay, it also confuses some first-time users, because they'll board the wrong side of the platform, or they'll be directed to the other side of the platform and be confused about which way the trains are running. But of course the Gold Line is in its own right of way, for the most part.

However, on a PE car line where they rails share street traffic, I don't know that a train would be allowed to go against traffic....

If you look carefully you will see three sets of trolley tracks. The track that the birney car is on is the local line track. The two tracks in front are for the main lines going to and from Los Angeles and Venice Beach.

Interesting (to me anyway) is that directly across the street from Marie Prevost's apartment building is an exact duplicate of her building.

That's a great site, Dylan. Lee has quite the Buck Rogers imagination. I was struck by the
resemblance of the (unbuilt) office building above to Coulters on Wilshire by Stiles O. Clements:
LAPL

We've discussed Coulters before, but I recently came across this interesting ad in the Times
from 1937:
Los Angeles Times
Perhaps the death of the founder's
wife that year had something to do
with the rumors. It seems that her
son-in-law, Dr. Robert McReynolds,
who ran the company and was
known for his interest in architec-
ture, pushed forward with the new
building on the Miracle Mile. Sadly
it was demolished in the early '80s.

i have been looking for like forever for a photograph of the Mickey Cohen backed nightclub Slapsy Maxie's, named for fighter and sometime bit part actor, Maxie Rosenbloom.

the club was located at 5665 wilshire boulevard between the years of 1943 and 1950, the former site of the wilshire bowl nightclub.

Source: LAPL

The location of the nightclub is the North East Corner of Wilshire and masselin, the future site of van de kamps wilshire coffee shop

Source: LAPL

anyway, without further adieu, i present to you slapsy maxie's,

1943

1947 after it had been remodeled

cartoon advertisement for slapsy maxie's

as an added bonus on the southern california architectural history site, (http://so-cal-arch-history.com), i stumbled upon the only dead front on, full elevation photograph that i have ever seen of the john lautner designed googie coffee shop smack up next to schwab's on sunset at crescent heights.

all in all, a pretty good day!

Before the Wilshire Bowl location Slapsy Maxies was located at 7165 Beverly Blvd. Today it is the Beverly Cinema.

Ticker Tape Parades.

Look how close people could get to the cars.

Try stepping off the curb now......You'd be in a headlock before shoe leather touched pavement. (Assuming parade watchers still wore leather shoes, which they don't.)

I'm not suggesting to go back to those days.....but it is interesting to note.

OK, that settles it. With all those sumptuous ladies on the menu, and that moose mural on one wall, the Paris Inn would definitely be my favorite "spot" in old L.A.!

EDIT: Yay! I found the menu for Scandia! (Thanks, gsj!) It's from 1981, which would have been right around the last time my family went there. Sure enough, I added up the total for what we all would have ordered, and the tab (before tip) came out to $98.50 for dinner and drinks. Ouch! and Yum! at once!

*chuckle* Always liked this cute little viking bull on the menu, right next to my favorite beef dish. ^^
