Gorgeous area. I'd love to do a very comprehensive trip to China, and spend a couple months travelling throughout the country.

There's no way you could pull off a comprehensive trip in a couple of months! That would be like trying to see the USA or all of Europe in 2 months. My advice would be to focus on 3-5 provinces in that short amount of time.

Not to Ganze in particular, but I have travelled through Western Sichuan. I would love to go back and see more as I focused on 4 provinces in 3 months and it was nowhere near enough time.
