Slave Lake on Fire

As per CTV News

Image shows the town hall on fire. I have some distant family (a couple of my dad's cousins) in Slave Lake.

Just saw that now. Pretty destructive and devastating to see. Reminds me of the outbreak of fires in the early 2000s in the interior of BC that burned down swaths of the Okanagan. =S

That's absolutely crazy! I hope the whole town doesn't burn up. Really sad story.

30-50% of the town could be gone. The hospital was evacuated and threatened as of midnight. I see Calgary FD is sending 8 trucks and 100 men up. Also about 300 evacuees are heading to or are in Edmonton.

The town hall was still getting warranty work done on it.

Girlfriend knows people in the area, over half the town is now gone.

It's going to be very interesting to see how the town rebounds and rebuilds from this disaster. Sounds like they have lost a significant amount of both business and housing. Will businesses be willing to rebuild if the population takes a hit (no places for people to live), and will people be willing to rebuild their homes if their are no businesses in town to purchase required services from.

Chicken and egg scenario.

I was the CA for this project... very sad to see it burn.

I was involved on a few parts of this as well. It was a good looking building. Interestingly the wood shades seem to have survived.

Was at a family reunion today and a whole bunch of second and third cousins live in Slave Lake. They brought along a few images of the fire, the aftermath and the rebuilding. Hopefully they will see this thread when they get back and upload some of those pictures here.
