NETHERLANDS | Mountain | 6600 FT / 2000 M

People in the Netherlands are brainstorming about the feasability to construct a 2000m mountain, the kind with snow on the top for skying and other sports.

This is not an art project, but not yet a commercial project either.

It would be a man-made construction for business and residential purposes, so I guess it's a skyscraper. Some proposals even call for a hollow mountain with shops, sports halls, etc, inside, just like inside a regular skyscraper.

Their website (currently only in Dutch, but with some artist renderings): www.diebergkomter.nl (url translation: "that mountain will come").

I dont think this can be called a skyscraper any more than the Hadron Collider.

For some reason I doubt that a country that takes almost the entire summer off as a construction holiday is going to be able to construct a 6000 foot mountain... I mean they would only be able to work on it for like a month a year before the snow would begin again at the top of the mountain unless they gave up their summer break...

Additionally, where are they going to get all the necessary dirt? By digging the rest of the country even deeper below sea level?

they could easily engineer some type of hording for the cold months. in fact it could be covered year round. that would guarantee the construction would not be delayed by any weather conditions. i would love to see someone do project like this one. canada should do it. we have the materials for such a project in vast supply. it should be done because it can be done. now lets get to it.

I must say, this is the dumbest idea in a long time, I am disappointed that Netherlanders would conceive of something this idiotic.

Lol money is an expression of value and is used to judge the inherent "worthiness" of one idea over another. It is also exactly why things shouldn't just be done because they can be done. I could spend my entire life digging a hole. It can be done. Does that mean I should therefore do it? No, because a million things "can be done" but only a select few should ever actually be done.

So could it work

In the area between Cologne and Aachen, there is one of the largest lignite mining area in Europe, where also the largest excavators of the world are working. Why not to transport the deposit material to the Netherlands by a double-gauged railway and to form of it a mountain?
However it will not be a steep mountain, but one excellent for amateur skiers!

Isn't lignite pre-compressed coal? I've seen it in Colorado and it has the consistancy of toothpaste.

If anyone is seriously taking this seriously than they live in an alternate reality where currency doesnt matter and there is somehow an infinite amount of resources. This is dumb, no other way to put it. Plus Im sure even if it were financially feasible it would look so stupid and cheesy and just wrong. I mean seriously, who thought up this stupid idea?

Maybe this is why Austin Powers dad hated the Dutch so much.

In a super-flat country, I think it would be cool to building something super-tall, to give the country a focus, something you could see from all parts of the country on a clear day, if that should ever happen in the Netherlands!

I almost went crazy when I spent a summer in Florida, looking for even a small hill to relieve the boredom of all that flatness, and wouldn't that be too cool to park a man-made mountain, of some kind, smack dab in the middle of Florida (snow-capped in winter time?) with a cable car going to the top for unprecedented views. Like seeing Cuba or the Bahama's with a telescope?

Instead of burying all our trash underground, start carting it off somewhere, and little by little, build a mountain! It would also provide some protection from a hurricane coming any which way?
