I've not walked the block on foot, but i've driven through their many many times in either late morning or early afternoon. My job frequently takes me into rougher neighborhoods.

This area has a rough feel, of course, but I think it's highly unique among black communities in Chicago in that there is a very high concentration of businesses, particularly clothing retailers. There are actually relatively few vacant storefronts. Similarly, the amount of foot traffic on that intersection is unlike anything I've seen in any other stereotypical "ghetto" neighborhoods.

Edit: I should add that I've been on a lot of the residential side streets on foot and in some of the apartment buildings. I wouldn't recommend it to somebody who had no reason to be there.

If you spend a bit more money on it, you can conceal the motor and housing inside the facade, so the storefront looks completely normal until the roller comes out of a slit.

I just read on curbed that the North Bank on Clark and Illinois is being demolished and possibly being made ready for the 3 building hotel, with over 600 rooms, that spyguy posted a while back.

Commercial Avenue in South Chicago has a lot of these also mostly from 92nd to 87th st.

It'd be cool if they did start it soon. I hope they haven't just done that to expand the parking lot. I found it disappointing that they couldn't have at least preserved the facade to add some texture to the new buildings, but once that hotel complex and the AMLI thing a block south of there are done, it'll be two more blocks of River North built out!

Speaking of finished blocks, depending on how you count a "block," there are about 126 blocks between the River, Chicago Ave, and Michigan Ave. Currently there are about 28 blocks with unattached surface parking on them, and 5-6 more with attached parking (lots dedicated exclusively or primarily to an adjacent business, like the McDonalds). There are a lot fewer blocks with surface lots than there used to be, but still a ways to go before it's totally built out, too.

Chicago Motor Club Building due for an overhaul, maybe a hotel

Chicago Sun Times
10/11/11

"...the 1928 building has a new owner and may finally get its due. Aries Capital, a Chicago-based mortgage bank, gained title to it a few weeks ago via foreclosure and wants to make it a boutique hotel. Andrew Wilson, vice president of Aries, said he’s looking for financial partners who share his belief that there’s money to be made from a thoughtful preservation. “We feel like we bought a van Gogh,” he said. The 15-story building is a gem and is expected to get city landmark designation. The design of Holabird & Root featured ornament and materials to present a positive image for the old motor club, part of AAA, and to promote auto travel. In the 1920s, the club was establishing itself as an advocate for good roads and services for motorists. The building’s three-story lobby includes a map of early U.S. highways by celebrated muralist John Warner Norton..."

From about a quarter mile away, it looks like Case is active on the new K-Station site. Someone should stop by this week and see if it's actual caisson drilling.

Yes from the Green line the caisson rigs are visible and set up, not sure if they are in action yet.

And the parking lot that will be AMLI is closed, fence removed, new temp fence being set up.

Just wanted to clarify that this isn't really a new restaurant per-se. . . it's the outdoor seating for the Mariano's Fresh Market cafe which - without trying to sound overly giddy - serves soups/sandwiches, sushi, coffee, gelato and when weather permitting they grill sandwiches for $7.00 with chips and drink included. . . it's been a god-send to this neighborhood. . .

Just to clarify, yesterday the rigs were parked in a different location on the site and had more equipment on them than the 10-8 photo from george.
