there are great restaurants in ottawa (play, town, beckta, fraser cafe...these are good spots) but its an effortlessness thing....in montreal, i can spontaneously decide to go out for a great dinner and cocktail at 11 pm any day of the week and i will have a surfeit of options...not here. you need to plan a bit more. that effortlessness -- sprezzatura -- is the mark of a metropole.

(this is no slight against ottawa, which does exceptionally well for it's size in a north american context. i have been, for instance, to jacksonville.)
