Cineplex offers low-cost family movies

By Staff Writer - The Tri-City News
Published: February 07, 2012 1:00 PM
Updated: February 07, 2012 1:22 PM

Family movies at a good price are being offered at Cineplex theatres across Canada including SilverCity Coquitlam at 170 Schoolhouse St.

Movies will run-year round beginning Feb. 18 and will include classics such as The Muppet Movie, The Land Before Time, Stuart Little and The Never Ending Story.

“We wanted to create a regularly scheduled program that mom, dad and even the grandparents can enjoy with the kids,” said Pat Marshall, vice-president, communications and investor relations, Cineplex Entertainment. “Families can share and celebrate the experience of taking a child to their first movie in a theatre or the return of a beloved movie back on the big screen with the selections that will be a part of our Family Favourites program.”

Tickets are only $2.50 and can be purchased at participating theatre box offices, online at www.cineplex.com/family or on the mobile site m.cineplex.com.

I like it. Smart move by cineplex.

Families get a low cost activity and cineplex probably still makes money as the majority of their yields come from concessions anyway.

B.C. government changes rules to allow liquor licensed venues to screen movies

By Stephen Hui, February 9, 2012
Updates:
• Rio Theatre owner says liquor licensing changes are not a real fix
• NDP MLA Jenny Kwan welcomes new B.C. liquor licence rules

After weeks of controversy over East Vancouver's Rio Theatre losing the ability to screen films after gaining a liquor licence, the B.C. Liberal government is changing the rules.

Rich Coleman, minister of energy and mines, announced this morning (February 9) that "effective immediately" the province is "making liquor licences more flexible for venues that host live events".

According to a news release from the Ministry of Energy and Mines, the regulatory change will mean that licence holders can screen films and broadcast pay-per-view programs outside the hours outlined in their liquor licence.

Licensed venues will still not be allowed to serve liquor during the screening of movies.

"Licence holders will have the ability to choose the days of the week and hours of the day they wish to have liquor service, and are free to screen films or broadcasts on the other days and times of the week," the release states.

"Once the days and hours of liquor service have been approved by the Liquor Control and Licensing Branch, licence holders may apply for temporary changes to liquor service hours."

Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival screenings originally scheduled for the Rio Theatre had to be moved to Denman Cinemas, after the Rio got a liquor licence and was informed by the Liquor Control and Licensing Branch that it could no longer screen films.

may as well throw this in here - i was dialing around the am dial a couple times now in a car and later at night, like 11 or so i have received am stations from California, one night i got a signal from the bay area and another time i got a signal from fresno, kinda weird but it was quite clear and listenable, seems to only work at night though

they also come in during strong ridges of high pressure in the summer. An Spanish AM station from Portland always screws around with News 1130 during the summer

Waldorf is amazing, great on a friday lots of different rooms to explore

560 has a ton of potential that has been wasted, suppose to be the new richards on richards... guess that never happened lol!

Fortune has cool shows and a good vibe, staff and owners are awesome

W2 under woodwards is really neat, lots of cool stuff happens there

Open Studios is my favourite venue, heart of the underground music scene in Vancouver I would say

I try to avoid Granville

The same happened to me a few years back. Was driving in Edmonton and got The TEAM 1040 clear as a bell yet I lose the signal before Hope here in BC. It was also at night. Weird.

Top 7 techno nights in Vancouver

Techno is alive and well in Vancouver, and appears to be thriving. Despite the decline in venues suffered of late, a number of new and established nights still pepper the scene... great news for fans of the genre.

....

1. Subversive - Promoters of underground techno and house.

2. Intimate Productions - Reputable promoters in the club scene.

3. Bonz.ai - The first and third Thursday of every month at Lanalou's.

4. TECHNO - Subspec's new monthly night at Pub 340.

5. Soundproof @ The Anza v2.0 - Soundproof's bi-monthly night at the Anza Club.

6. Technicolour Fridays - The second and fourth Friday of every month at The Den at Barclay.

7. Delete Fridays - Blueprint's new weekly night at Shine Nightclub.

Wow. That's an interesting development. Main St. is starting to get intense.

The building looks so small from the outside, but it's a theater so it must be a fairly large space.

That reminds me about another place opening around Mid Main - Shameful Tiki Room
