I've got some historic photos from the family archive.

Downtown from the RVYC in Kits.

I think the second boat in the center might be my grandfathers, who's just about to turn 91 this year. No idea who the photographer was, but it was taken in a box of slides from about 1955.

Hopefully I'll have some more good ones, I've got about 1/4 of the way through a box of old slides and they've mostly been christmas ones. I think the next set will probably be mostly boat stuff.

Don't know if you guys have heard of this site, but it's called Historypin, and it allows people to post historic photos of any location, and superimpose it upon the Google Street View shot, so you can do a direct fade-in, fade-out comparison between today and the historic photo.

Hey everyone, just thought I'd do a little shameless self promotion here. I've partnered up with an app developer for a Vancouver Then and Now app for Android and iPhone. All of the now photos are mine, and the old photos are public domain and from the VPL and Vancouver Archives. I've spent quite a bit of time doing over 1400 then and now comparisons since 2007 and this seems like a great way to share the photos and make some of them interactive.
Btw, this same company has developed apps for Montreal, Barcelona, Paris and two other French cities.

Anyway, you can check out the promo video here, along with more info:
http://www.mycitybefore.com/2012/07/...nd-now-launch/

And buy the app here from here:
http://www.mycitybefore.com/

And if this post is deemed advertising and is frowned upon on SSP, I apologize, it can be removed, but I think many forumers on here may find it right up their alleys

I don't have an issue with the post as you've posted so many of those pics on here already and are a contributing member. I actually read about the app in the Province last night and thought it was probably you behind it. Congrats.

Photos: Rare glimpses of Vancouver’s past

A rare copy of a four-volume set recounting Capt. George Vancouver’s voyages of discovery is among treasured books that will go up for auction at an antiquarian book fair in Vancouver this weekend.

800 Block Granville Summer 1981. Historic? Mr Jakes, still hanging in. South of the Coronet are an arcade with "Girlie Movies", a Japanese restaurant, and Krak-A-Joke, a fun place to kill time browsing the fake dog poop. The Coronet is showing Stripes with Bill Murray, and On The Right Track with Gary Coleman. Tough choice.

Some streetscapes haven't changed much for 100 years. Some are unrecognizable. Yes, this IS Vancouver, fall of 1942. Burrard & Melville. Yes, 70 years later, those two buildings are Burrard Station. Bowell-McDonald, later Bowell-Mclean. In the 70s, when Dunsmuir was connected to Melville resulted in a leftover lot, "Bow-Mac Park" was its proposed name.

Great pics!

Notice, no license plates on the trolley buses (they were legally "trains" at the time).

The Marine Building is the only building still standing. For that matter, at least 2 buildings built after 1942 have since been demolished. Note the wood frame house across the alley from Bow-Mac. Replaced with an office building, then torn down for Bentall.

All photos are from the Vancouver Archives site... Even mundane photos may contain surprises. Such as this... Huh, I never knew that... http://searcharchives.vancouver.ca/v...d-dunsmuir;rad
