istanbul: a visit to kadikoy neighborhood on the asian side

the asian side is kind of like the queens of istanbul.
the kadikoy neighborhood is built over the former ancient city of chalcedon.
however, relics going back to 5500BC have been found there.

first is the charming commuter ferry ride across the sea of mamara and
over the mouth of the bosphorus from karikoy in the old city

topkapi palace view

bosphorus bridge

aya sofia and blue mosque in the distance

kiz kulesi
aka maiden’s tower
aka leanders tower
lighthouse (408BC, 1110, 1509, 1763, 1998-9)

massive selimiye barracks (1800, 1926) fka scutari barracks, has the florence nightingale museum

i think this one is a mamara college bldg, not sure

new subway car delivery on the docks

grain warehouse

the first stop is haydarpasa station (1872, 1908)

another short ferry ride over the bay from haydarpasa train station to the kadikoy dock

türkbalon is a helium balloon moored on kadıköy quay, taking passengers during season for a fee up to an altitude of 200 m, offering a panoramic view of the area and the historic center of istanbul across the bosphorus.

kadikoy views

around the busy passenger ferry dock

surreya operasi (1926)

hamam ruin preserved

kadikoy trolley (T3 ring murhurder)
one of two istanbul working nostalgic trolleys

an example of the evil eye symbol you see everywhere on this narghile café sign

the very popular deco era rexx sinemasi movie theater on the right

heading back to the old city

galata tower over the old city

bosphorus bridge lights coming on

galata bridge

*** i hope you enjoyed a pleasant late afternoon trip to the asian side of istanbul ***
