I really personally hate this. Austin Java is one of the only places downtown you can have breakfast without being fancy. It would be a great loss to the mix that makes downtown more livable. We go there on a regualar basis on the weekend. And papa don't preach about best use , blah blah. If you live downtown you'll understand the real implication. We need dinners and deli's Bad.

The old Katz would be a great place for a diner or deli, anyone got money to invest?? I wonder why that has taken so long to be bought...

Here is what I wish. I love 24, but it sure would be great to have some more early morning options. I miss Katz. There are lots of places around DT like Magnolia or Kerby Lane, but when I have jet lag and can't sleep and go for a super early breakfast downtown I always just end up at 24. And 24 is great. Just wish there were more.

doesn't 24 get expensive after awhile? i had a breakfast sandwich there once for $15. all i could remember was how even in san francisco that would be pretty pricy.

Heh, ya it can be a bit expensive. Breakfast there is like 10-15 bucks. I usually get the same thing and with the tip + tea it is like $12. My normal breakfast at Magnolia (which is closer to Westlake and I go there more than 24) is about $8 with tip and tea. It is actually cheaper to cross Lamar and get something at Whole Foods and eat it out front. lol. But I don't think 24 is any more expensive than Katz was. Katz was kinda high too. And the food and milkshakes and tea at 24 is really dang good. So it is worth it to me.

The last few times I have taken early AM trips to Kirby Lane I have been a bit disappointed in the food. =( Though to be fair that has been a while. Before they moved the south location.

last time i was in austin i took my mom and sister and her kids to the new kerbey lane on lamar. the hostesses were kinda lame. they didn't smile and when one of my cute little nephews approached them at the counter trying to interact with them they just stared down at him as if they were grossed out by him. one of the strangest experiences ever at kerbey lane.

my sister looked a bit bothered by it. but we all enjoyed the food.

they were probably college kids and were from another part of the country because people from austin will most likely smile and interact with you. i mean, it's very rare to meet people like that. the waitress was way more friendly with us and teased my niece and nephew even when they were starting to get a bit spoiled.

but yeah, i prefer magnolia's, especially the one of Lake Austin. boy the memories, going there passed midnight and eating some french toast!

I seem to remember that Katz had taken out all sorts of loans on the property, then sold it and leased it back or something, so there could be some financial issues.

Also, when you have a long-time restaurant like that, chances are tons of things are out of code in the space. The new tenant would not be moving into a ready-to-go location; it would likely need lots of work put into it.

I,'m with ya... but none of those are in the center of downtown. . You are right it would be great if a diner/deli went back into Katz! And 24 is great but not "cheap ass" like Austin Java..... I also love the egg sandwich at 2nd on weekend mornings.. but I don't feel like I can "roll out of bed and grab some eggs" there either. Gotta at least shower! LOL!

Don't forget the original Austin Java, still pretty convenient to downtowners at 12 & Lamar and with a nice homey atmosphere. Bonus points to anyone who remembers the giant rotating Terminex bug, now exiled to the I-35 hinterlands, at that location before AJ moved in.

totally remember it.

The deal is.... from where I live we do walk.ride to that AJ as well. BUT... it the AJ at City Hall is the only only cheap breakfast lunch brick and morter place in the center of downtown. If you live in the CBD, it;s hard to avoid the "BRUCH" crowd on weekends.

I realize this is sounding very whiny.... I'll shut up LOL! Poor me! LOL!

Austin's own version of Gruene Hall part of downtown redevelopment project
Shonda Novak
American-Statesman Staff
April 24, 2012

Quote:
A project in the works downtown could bring new life to two dilapidated warehouse buildings including converting one of them into Austin's version of the famed Gruene Hall music venue in New Braunfels.

The old warehouse buildings at Fourth and Brazos streets — along with a newer building at the site — were purchased in May 2011 by Austin-based Hospital Housekeeping Systems, one of the nation's largest privately owned hospital support services firms.

Craig Holmes, the firm's chairman, is part of a partnership, Brazos Hall LLC, that is redeveloping one of the warehouses into Brazos Hall, an entertainment venue.

Those involved in that is basically a whose-who of Austin. Pretty exciting.

Quote:
Young and Holmes are joined in the partnership — which is funding interior renovations and will operate the venue — by Roy Spence, co-founder of Austin advertising agency GSD&M Idea City, and his wife, Mary; Judy Trabulsi, also a GSD&M founder; principals Charles Attal, Charlie Jones and Charlie Walker of C3 Presents, which produces the Austin City Limits and Lollapalooza festivals; Jeff Waughtal of Stubb's and Frontgate Tickets; and Matt Luckie, who owns several local restaurants and bars.

If there was any group in Austin who could possible recreate the Armadillo World Headquarters, those involved with Brazos Hall would be it.

Financing secured, 'all systems are go' for downtown Austin convention hotel
By Shonda Novak
American-Statesman Staff

Quote:
White Lodging Services Corp. has financing in place for its $275 million, 33-story upscale convention hotel planned along Congress Avenue and is preparing for a June launch for the project.

A top company executive provided new details about the project — one of largest developments in downtown Austin's history — in an exclusive interview with the American-Statesman.

On June 15, crews are expected to start work to relocate underground utilities at the site on Congress Avenue between Second and Third streets, said Deno Yiankes, president and CEO of investments and development for White Lodging, a hotel development, ownership and management company based in Merrillville, Ind.

White Lodging is aiming for an Aug. 1 start for construction on a three-story underground parking garage with 458 spaces that will take nine to 10 months to build, followed by construction of the hotel, a JW Marriott with 1,012 rooms, up from 1,003 previously planned.

So awesome. I'm glad they changed the design. This will be a great anchor for Congress Ave.

Apple Deal

The Apple deal could be at risk because of two old time no-growth PIGS from the past, Aleshire and Wendler...Will these A-Holes ever go away?...They are willing to put 3000+ jobs at risk and could care less...They want to stop growth at ALL costs..
