First Visionista Makes the Opportunistic Jump to NDP

Sure would have been nice if Constance Barnes had decided that before she ran for Parks Board a few short months ago, and saved taxpayers the (possible) cost of a byelection. Still, if Meggs and Bacchus make the rumoured jump and try and get a seat in Victoria, we can replace them more practical choices!

A similar kind of opportunistic "jumping" happended waaaaay back when the then-foundering BC Liberal party saw many members defect to the Social Credit party. Even with the best of intentions, people are people, and where there exists an opportunity to climb the social/political/economic ladder, someone is always around to do it.

It's pertinent here because of the person involved, and the current political implications relating to Vancouver, but not anything particularly unusual. (just another pain in the ass, if you'll excuse my being blunt about it)

she's stated she will attempt to keep her parks board position regardless if she becomes an MLA

Anyone with such a simplistic view of how the real world works should...

Seriously?

Think about it. How can ANYONE simultaneously work for two levels of government?

Maybe in a socialist paradise, but not in the real world.

Dammit, Geoff Meggs lost the NDP nomination for Vancouver-Fairview to George Heymann. That means we're stuck with Meggs on Council for another two years.

Oops and now Constance Barnes got shot down by Matt Toner for the Vancouver-False Creek nomination. Seems like the Visionistas aren't too popular with rank and file NDPers.

Didn't want to create a new thread, but thought I'd share the good news. The NHL impasse is about to end thanks to Geoff Meggs and the COV's upcoming letter to the NHL.

Quote:
MOVER: Councillor Geoff Meggs
SECONDER:
WHEREAS
1. The Vancouver Canucks are involved in collective bargaining negotiations
between the National Hockey League Players’ Association (“NHLPA”) and the
National Hockey League (“NHL”);
2. The NHL and NHL Players’ Association remain in lockout, stalemated, with no
clear path to resolution in sight;
3. The Canucks generate revenues in excess of $100 million annually, as well as
spinoff benefits of a similar magnitude for the local economy;
4. The loss of the entire season by one of Vancouver’s leading professional sports
teams would have a ripple effect on thousands of city residents, from
employees of the Canucks, to food vendors and security and cleaning staff at
Rogers Arena, as well as local sports bars, restaurants, hotels, with a total
economic loss of tens of millions of dollars;
5. The Canucks have a deep connection to the community, but are unable to
continue making their usual contributions to charities and other community
organizations in Metro Vancouver; and
6. The City of Ottawa has called on other NHL cities to join it in urging a swift
resolution of this impasse by sending a letter to the Executive Director of the
NHLPA and the commissioner of the NHL, highlighting the economic impact of
this dispute.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT Vancouver City Council endorse Ottawa’s appeal,
ask the Mayor to write to the National Hockey League (NHL) and the National Hockey
League Players’ Association (NHLPA) urging a speedy end to the dispute, and
encourage other NHL cities to follow Ottawa’s example.

Seems like Ottawa's council has too much time on their hands as well.

city councils make statements like this all the time, supporting earth day or some ethnic festival or whatever, there's nothing unusual or strange about some symbolic motion like this.

And definitely nothing unusual for the Ottawa city council either, I assure you. That city has had decades of rainbow-and-unicorn politicians, the likes of which we have only enjoyed for a few years.

It's great to know that Geoff Meggs really does care about the important issues.

You would be surprised how many times I was asked about those nuclear free zone signs by out of towner's. Are they still around by the way?

Found a pick and the ones I remember were in Coquitlam, Burnaby area and were not brown...they were like green white and just said "x is a nuclear free zone".

Honestly I cant believe public money was spent on this though. Although it would have been more meaningful back then when this was a front and center global issue..in places like Czech rep school children had nuclear attack drills where they had to put on gas masks and learn what to do when the missiles started raining down...ahmm, sure hope we don't go back to those days.

Video Link

kind of politically related I guess...nice reminder for all of us of what has been so we dont repeat these mistakes again, afteral there are plenty of nukes ready to launch just sitting out there all around the world still.

edit: And now that I have thought about this some more I actually like the signs, they are a good reminder to everyone about a issue that is still very real and that none of us should forget about. You can talk all the global warming you want, but the biggest threat to all of humanity is still nuclear war. In a matter of hours we can wipe our selves off of this earth, scary thought.

They had ones in Coquitlam or Burnaby or both. Pretty sure it was Coquitlam though. I don't remember seeing any of them in a while though.

In that same vein, it appears that world climate change is about to be resolved - with apparent future reduced BC coal exports - thanks to a letter from Vacouver's mayor to the Port of Vancouver.

Mayor has questions about coal exports

Vancouver's Mayor is asking questions about plans by local port authorities to increase coal exports.

Gregor Robertson's written a letter to Port Metro Vancouver requesting full public consultation before any decisions are finalized.

He's concerned because if two proposals to boost exports are approved, Vancouver's Port will become the largest exporter of coal in North America.

Robertson also says city council's been seeking more public input since July of 2010.

Let's see, so the man charged with increasing business in the city doesn't want coal, oil and probably gas moving through our port...is he out looking for new markets for pixie dust?
