Agreed. Though It is our main business street, it looks like it could be [insert secondary Russian back water]'s main drag.

The new towers are going to help a great deal. Also, nothing wrong with adding more restaurants / clubs / late night venues on a street that dies a miserable death after 5 o'clock.

Looks like it's shaping up to be a nice building, and a breath of fresh air for that area of the city...

Interesting how a mere 124 M can have a large effect on the downtown core. Now, let us just imagine a 150m or 200m tower

Great pictures guys.

Is it me, or is Philips square rediculously underrated?

I think I preferred Philips Square better before Altitude was built. I liked being able to see Place Ville-Marie, a real skyskcraper designed by famed architect IM Pei. Now it's hidden by a generic condo building that isn't nearly as impressive.

LOL - Didn't you have the same complain about District Griffin which will hide downtown from the Peel bassin ? That's the catch 22 of skyline: new buildings are needed to expand, but they will hide elements of the existing skyline in the process. Look at Toronto from the lake: before you had a well balance skyline with landmarks: the Royal York, the Toronto Dominion buildings by Mies, the CIBC tower by Pei, etc. Now they are all hidden by a forest of bland and generic green-glass towers that makes the skyline (from that point of view) not very beautiful or interesting, even though impressive in sheer size.

You are right that it was nice to see PVM from Phillips Square; it was a nice vantage point to admire it. But there are many others. PVM is very much omnipresent in the skyline.

^Yeah, District Griffin bugs me a little as well, although I think if there was some variation in the heights (some 10 floor buildings and some 30 floors), and better architecture, it would be more palatable.

I think the perfect spot for Altitude would have been on De Maisonneuve (maybe the east side of de la Montagne). I think Le Crystal would have looked better near there as well, as 25-30 floors is the norm for that part of town. I think a sleek black tower of around 40 floors would have worked well in Altitude's spot. X Condos in Toronto is quite good, IMO. The architect, Peter Clewes, is originally from Montreal.

I completely agree with you on the copy paste quality of some of the buildings along the lakefront in Toronto. The green glass thing works well for Vancouver, but not so much for an older city like Toronto or Montreal.

That said, I like the fact that most of Montreal's proposals are varied in terms of architecture. I think my favourite is the Ilot Overdale. I don't mind a little green glass, but in very small doses only.

more significant is the loss of the original "Olde Dublin Pub"

virtualtourist.com

I spent half my money in that place during my twenties.

The new one, less than 20m away, has its own charm and dignity. I know this, but not because I've spent half my money there already in my mid twenties, or did I?

In the sense that it is not a square talked about in the same vein as Saint-Louis, or Place d'Armes (I think it should).

Christopher DeWolf (Kilgore Trout) wrote an interesting little piece on it, actually.

That was my exact initial reaction when I saw that picture as well.
I love new construction and glad to see so much happening/proposed/rumoured in Montreal. But as a vantage point to view PVM - that view from Phillips Square is now diminished.
(not sure if that made any sense)
