The RDA's Design Review Committee has to approve the final design of the project, and I've heard the committee is very dedicated to keeping the sign.

Sugar House Crossing development set to rise atop the ‘Sugar Hole’

Sugar House Crossing development set to rise atop the ‘Sugar Hole’
Funding » Developer Craig Mecham now has financing to begin construction.
By Christopher Smart | The Salt Lake Tribune

Say goodbye to the "Sugar Hole."

It’s been a long time coming, but developer Craig Mecham has secured financing to begin construction on a mixed-use project on the southwest corner of the intersection of Highland Drive (1100 East) and 2100 South in the heart of Sugar House.

Some 4.5 acres there have been barren since 2009, following the economic downturn that halted many construction projects across the country as lending institutions braced for a meltdown. In the aftermath of the demolition of the old buildings at the site, critics derided the spot as the "Sugar Hole."

But soon, Sugar House Crossing will rise in its place, Mecham said Friday, thanks in part to a loan from the Salt Lake City Redevelopment Agency. Mecham closed a $5 million loan with the RDA during the final days of May. It outlines a 3 percent interest rate over 10 years.

The $53 million project also is funded by a $36 million loan from Wells Fargo Bank and an additional $12 million Mecham will sink into the project.

Sugar House Crossing will have about 45,000 square feet of ground-level retail space topped by some 210 apartments. The commercial space will be composed of local and chain businesses, according to Mecham’s stated plan.

The Sugar House Crossing development will be a great addition to the area. Hopefully in the next 5-10 years we will see housing project go up over 10 floors.

Sugar House alone should keep our forum pretty interesting for the next while.

Cowboy Partners' project in Sugar House is on the Planning Commission Agenda next week. There are a few elevations in the planning staff report at this link: http://www.slcclassic.com/boards/pla...2012-00243.pdf They start at page 40 if somebody would like to post them here that would be nice.

Not a big fan of the elevations, but I suppose density is density, and density is good in my book.

The East elevation almost seems to be paying a little hommage to the Irvin School, just my initial observation. I too like having some additional density in the area, Sugarhouse is really going to be crawling with so many new residents in the next 5 years. I love it.

That's not going to leave a lot of parking for those restaurants. I've used those parking spaces quite a bit during lunchtime when it gets busy as the spaces right in front of the restaurants fill up really quick.

That's the first thing I noticed also Future Mayor. As much as I can tell, it looks like the sidewalk appeal will be quite attractive from the front lower levels. This will definitely add a lot of density.

I would have thought that you guys would have said something on here by now, but construction on the sugar hole has officially started. traffic has been reduced to only two lanes on highland drive to make way for construction vehicles, and all of the fill in dirt they had to put in the hole when the project feel through has been dug back out again! sorry, i wasn't able to get pictures...but i was sure that you guys would appreciate the update.

I think it was pretty well covered, but on the Salt Lake City thread.

Sometimes, I wish I had never created this thread, but then I'm sure somebody else would have anyway. At this point, after having been a forum member for a few years, I appreciate not dividing Salt Lake City into so many little pieces. Not a huge drama, just saying...
