They installed swinging gates at most of the pedestrian crossings on the new extension in the NE. They only one i can't figure out is at the east crossing of Martindale Blvd, where they have a single swinging gate at the edge of the sidewalk adjacent to the road, but then don't have any swinging gates at all for the rest of the sidewalk, however there are crossing arms that come down for the sidewalk at that intersection, and at none of the other new crossings. I'm trying to figure out the reasoning for why it is like it is at that crossing.

They installed swinging gates or just the stationary bedsteads?

Sounds like a good idea - and it could be called: The New K-Tel "Yapper Slapper"!!!

Quick update from this weekend. Enmax has been stringing wire up the hill past Christie Gate. Noticed some testing of the signal arms at 47th street on saturday as well.

I really noticed the copper turning penny-brown on the Sunalta station this morning, especially the west end. Shame it will probably be mostly brown when the line opens.

Is it just me or has the West LRT website basically been abandoned?

- No project status updates posted since May
- Paving schedule is blank
- Construction & traffic map shows nothing meaningful
- No major construction updates since 2011

At least they're still emailing traffic updates. It's a shame as when it was firing on all cylinders it was an excellent website.

For the most part, there's nothing exciting to say at this point. All the little details that don't look like much are being done now.

They were updating the paving schedule a couple weeks back. But other than that, I agree. Would be nice to see at least a little status update.

And almost on cue, a small update. Almost no real interesting information, just some info on tunnel ventilation testing, and next week's test train to Sirocco. I just wish they'd stop advertising 'new' photos that were taken in April....

Still cannot believe they went ahead with the "Downtown West - Kerby" station name yet the terminus station is still "69th Street". Stations at the end of lines should have unique names to avoid confusion. Having "69th Street" (which really can be in any of the four quadrants) on the front of westbound trains is going to be a little strange.

Not to mention the fact that The Kerby Center wanted nothing to do with it and the Mewata Armoury is a huge part of Calgary's history. Maybe Mewata Station?

Epic fail Calgary transit

I don't understand how this name stood. They should have called it "Armory." Unlike the Kerby Centre, the Armory isn't going anywhere.

Kerby isn't named after the Kerby Centre, but rather named after the same family that the Kerby centre was named after. (The original landowners in that area)

But yes, just "Kerby" would have been fine, or any of the other single word names mentioned.

Hardly an epic fail by Calgary Transit. You can thank city council for changing the name from 11th Street (originally proposed) to DWK. Specifically John Mar.

Got this lovely email from the West LRT office a couple days ago to go in community newsletters:

Quote:
Title: The West LRT – The final work is underway

Crews continue to be hard at work this summer with the final construction components of the West LRT, but there are already some of the final testing elements of the project that are well underway.

Testing, which has been taking place on the line from downtown to the Shaganappi Point Station over the past few months, is now moving west. Beginning in mid-July, the West LRT test train will make its way from the Shaganappi Point Station to the 45 Street Station. It will then cross Sarcee trail and move towards 69 Street Station this fall.

This testing will ensure all the mechanical, electrical, safety, audio and visual systems on the new line are functional and fully integrated into Calgary Transit’s existing systems. Extensive testing is necessary to ensure LRT vehicles operate in a safe, proper and consistent manner.

While testing is going on throughout the summer and fall, residents can expect to see and hear the signal systems, such as the crossing arms and test trains, in operation at the various roadway crossings along the LRT alignment.

Motorists, pedestrians and cyclists are encouraged to pay extra attention at these intersections, as trains will be more frequently on the line over the coming months.

Simulated smoke testing to start in August

Another component of the testing phase is simulated smoke testing in the underground station and tunnels along the West LRT line. The simulated smoke testing is expected to start later this summer as part of Tunnel Ventilation System (TVS) test verification.

These tests are designed to measure the effectiveness of this fire and safety component to remove smoke quickly and efficiently from underground stations and tunnels.

Nearby residents and businesses may see or smell the simulated, harmless, cold smoke emitting from the exhaust ventilation shafts at the station and underground tunnel portals. This testing is standard procedure in advance of LRT operations and does not need to be reported to Emergency Services.

Information on the simulated cold smoke testing schedule, as well as other West LRT construction information is available at www.westlrt.ca.

Granted, not an epic fail, and good to hear that Kerby is for the original land owner, but the modern connection is the center and the land owner idea will not be common knowledge for anyone. Good initiative on Mar's part, so just a regular fail in my opinion.
