Any recent photos of this one out there? It must be looking pretty complete at this stage (knock on wood).

I think this project has a very underappreciated impact on the overall skyline from Parliament Hill.

I think you are correct about it contributing to the skyline in an almost conservative manner. When viewed with the other buildings at U of O from either Mackenzie King, or the Laurier bridge, it helps solidify the almost canyon wall effect of that side of Nicholas and the Canal. Overall, I like the exterior of this building, and I know that the best part of it is on the side facing into the University Campus. The exterior of the lower portion of the building fronting the transitway is a bit of a fail to me, asthetically, but I know that they likely did it because of the traffic going past it all the time would get old really quickly if it was glass from top to bottom.

Yeah, it only gets better as they finish up the outside...this could have been a lot worse/bland, and I think it should look especially good at night time if it's all lit up.

great looking building, an awesome addition to the canal. it's taller than you would expect for 15 stories and does it in style.

A great building.

It will be interesting to see if they do a good job on what will be the plaza on the university side of the building. What will it be called?

The naming rights for the tower is up for grabs. The rights to name the Desmarais Building went for 15 million dollars. The price tag on this tower will be higher. There is an extremely wealthy grad of uOttawa Social Science faculty for which this tower would be a natural fit. I won't mention a name lest I cause trouble.

Isn't the Telfer School going to be in this building? I've been surprised that it hasn't already been named "Telfer Tower"

Don't think so McC. The Telfer School of Management will remain permanently in the Desmarais Building.

Here is what the university web site says about who will use the new tower..

Quote:
The new tower will house the Faculty of Social Sciences and will include research space in priority areas such as neuroscience and experimental psychology, economics, public policy and management.

The facility will feature a number of new multimedia classrooms and significant new student spaces throughout. A 225-seat classroom and a large multi-purpose hall are proposed for the upper levels. The new Faculty of Social Sciences Building was designed to be expanded incrementally in the future and to eventually replace Vanier Hall with a larger facility
and

Quote:
The combined buildings (Vanier Hall and the new tower) will be able to house the following:
7,000 undergraduate students
1,000 graduate students
250 researchers and professors

So , it appears the Social Science Faculty will be the primary tenant of this tower. Social Science does currently have some elements housed in the Desmarais Building. It is they who will likely be moving over to the tower. The Faculty of Soc Sc, and the the Telfer School are two separate entities within the university.

What I have missed in the past is the statement that the new building may someday be expanded and replace the old Vanier Hall (about 60 yo I think) it is attached to.

That's too bad, I always liked Vanier Hall. They have way uglier buildings (nearly everything else south of University Private). At leat Morisset area will be improved.

This article does not say exactly where this plaza is going, but I would expect it is in the area ouside of the new tower/vanier Hall complex. The artist's concept of the surrounding buildings do not look like any real uOttawa buildings

uOttawa and “Monuments de la francophonie” partnership announcement

Posted on Thursday June 28th, 2012 by Dave Weatherall, under: Article, Campus life, Destination 2020, Events, Francophonie, News.

The University of Ottawa together with the organizing committee for the Monuments de la francophonie launched a fundraising campaign today for an installation on the University’s main campus to honour the francophone community.

“Located right in the heart of our downtown campus, the space will become a meeting and greeting place for the entire university community,” says Allan Rock, president of the University of Ottawa. “It will be a symbol of how important the Franco-Ontarian community is to the University of Ottawa and honour the contributions Franco-Ontarians have made to this province.”

“Today we are asking all members of the Franco-Ontarian community to generously support this project, which will truly increase the awareness of the francophonie here on the University of Ottawa main campus,” says Daniel Boivin, chair of the Monuments de la francophonie organizing committee.

The committee’s goal is to raise $100,000 over the next few months for construction, with any additional funds collected above this target used to raise the Franco-Ontarian flag at the University’s Lees campus, located next to Highway 417.

The installation will be, literally, concrete proof of the University of Ottawa’s ongoing commitment to Ontario’s francophone population and French-speaking people everywhere. This commitment, which dates back to the founding of the University in 1848 and is included in the 1965 University of Ottawa Act, has been an important element of the University of Ottawa for a very long time.

Made of materials that reflect traditional Canadian industries, such as forestry, mining and agriculture, the installation will boast benches reminiscent of log booms and beams and pillars that bring the log drive to mind. Granite bases and different steel and stainless steel elements are a reference to mining and metallurgy. The landscape design will be suggestive of traditional harvests and markets. Finally, the colours of the Franco-Ontarian flag will be incorporated into the panels.

Community members who would like to support this project are encouraged to make an online donation.

I don't know how accurate the city is, but could it be on the south side of the old Vanier Hall, represented on the Campus "metrO" station site plans;

If you look at the pics on the uOttawa flkr account, it appears to be the courtyard behind Perez Hall (music building) and Simard:
