True, but usually the rankings are done using questionable variables, and by outside firms.

It's got to mean something when the prime minister of the country flat out says Calgary's the greatest city, and then in a national poll by citizens across the country Calgary ranks number one as the best city in Canada as well. Also, shortly after, a separate poll by Angus Reid showed citizens ranked Calgary as having the highest quality of life of all the major cities in Canada.

Pretty good month for Calgary, along with the hundreds of other national/international news stories covering the stampede, record crowds, and record tourist activity.

I'm really contemplating moving here within the next few months along with seemingly a lot of out of town visitors, based on ramblings on the streets. The city could be on the verge of record growth years, with a solid economy, and a growing global presence.

There's an energy/optimism again in Calgary that's very hard to match

2004-5 all over again.

Just wait another couple of years - you haven't seen anything yet in this city.

Regardless of who he picks, it's probably not a good idea for the Prime Minister of Canada to make pronouncements about which city is the country's greatest.

Aren't we also Canada's cultural city of this year. Not bad to include our centennial stampede so I would support the argument from that article.
This stampede was really exciting as the entire city was abuzz and everybody was spending.

The only other citywide celebration which tops this is Oktoberfest in Munich. Interestingly, that and the stampede felt so similar in vibe and culture. People dressing up in the themed outfits and celebrating every day. Only difference is that in Oktoberfest everybody has their steins of beer drinking away in the morning and then eat sausages and pretzels for lunch.
Despite that both are hugely enjoyable yet costly experiences

Maybe he was just having a good day? I really dont think he meant it literally. It is just something people say. I dont have a favourite city, but your city is what you make it. Everyone seems down on Calgary so it is nice to hear it is a good city now and then. I like it here. The people make it what it is.....I always laugh when they call Calgary "too corporate." yeah right. It is one of the most relaxed places in Canada when you can just walk up to people you dont know and start partying with them.

In the end everyone has an opinion. It's not right or wrong, just an opinion. I was surprised Harper said it, but then again, I think he just got a bit carried away.
