i disagree. oakland is his hometown, so his tours are more tailored to specific parts of town, or certain narratives. with his philly thread and this st louis one, i think he did a great job of being well rounded, covering lots of ground, getting as close to the broad context as you can in a couple days' visit.

flava, i think ya done good. thanks for the interior shot at the top of the arch. i love high places, but i can't stand jammed in tight spaces. #80 is my favorite.

Nice photo thread!

Was this old tunnel originally built for transit or was it used for something else previously?

Nice photos. Good to see some ESTL on here. Most people don't like to venture in that area, but its really not all that bad. Having lived both in East St. Louis and on the North side, East St. Louis always felt much safer.

I can imagine that there were commuter trains that ran through there but I'm not sure. Regular freight trains I believe ran through there too, along with other downtown tunnels. It's a ridiculously well built tunnel, in any case.

I love the shots with the stormy overcast looming over! I'm mad I couldn't do much of anything when I was there due to a time constraint this past week. I'll probably post my set in a few weeks...

It's a little rough, but to be fair to the photographer the parts of the stable kempt southside aren't so quickly and easily accessible if you are coming by plane and taking the light rail to visit. It's still a rough and tumble industrial region, anyway.

The photographer did hit East St. Louis, it's made me want to photograph downtown East St. Louis, even though it makes me so sad. It used to be like New Orleans lite when my dad was young as far as what I feel is pretty damned high-brow music. There are still the all night low brow spots that I feel are as good or better than New Orleans, but it's an empty fun flesh thing.

Thanks for taking photos of East St Louis. I installed satellite dishes in this complex during my "blue" period. That's not one of them.

Below that dish is a bucket sized amount of concrete, and it involves calling the local dig-right company to mark the location of gas lines, etc. The cable lines are then buried underground to the wall of the building.

Heh, I have collected my greatest variety of casings in East St. Louis as a contractor for Ameren, and also have not felt threatened very often at all. I've seen probably the greatest "real" record collections of the mid 20th century in a basement there.

St. Louis is a city with a true presence and soul. Its very mature, historic and has an eastern vibe to it in some neighborhoods. An impressive place. I actually took a vacation there years back and of course i had to drive around E. St. Louis and see the urban prairie. Sad

Flava, I am most impressed with how you can dig into a city, take great photos, and see places many locals would never even see in a 2 day stop. That is an impressive tour in 2 days.
