While visiting family recently in Central Georgia, I had the chance to steal away and take a look at Macon. I've bypassed it on I-75 many times but never had a chance to explore it's downtown and "In-Town" area.
These shots are from a walking tour the nice lady at the visitor's center recommended so I know I didn't see everything. I found the building stock very impressive; also impressive is the musical history of the city. It's the hometown of the Allman Brothers, Otis Redding, Little Richard, plus two of the original members of R.E.M.
The central area had lots of vacant storefronts and more than its share of grit. With all the great architecture and it's proximity to Atlanta, Macon has the potential to be something really special.
Anyway, here are the pics, in no particular order.
i've been wanting to shoot Macon for about 4 years since i flew over it and took some shots. i was expecting work in Augusta to send me down there and i'd shoot it on the trip but i never had to go. someday i'll get there.

The potential is certainly there for this town. A heated political debate in these neck of the woods is consolidating the city and county this year, and if it's passed it will do wonders for this once capital of Georgia.
You missed out on the beautiful Mercer University campus. If I'm not mistaken, it has been ranked Top 5 before. The campus has amazing architecture. If I'm ever out and about down there, I'll be sure to take some shots and post them.
There are also great views of downtown at the Ocmulgee National Monument. Locals call it the "Indian Mounds," and rightfully so. The tallest of these mounds in this nationally preserved area shows a fantastic view of the city core. Definitely worth the trip.
I visited Macon for a few days this past winter for the Macon Film Festival (a great experience for up-and-coming filmmakers... the emphasis is on the craft and the process of making a film, not the glamour of the industry). Living so close my whole life, I've neglected the city... but it's a very beautiful place with a lot of quiet charm. Great architecture in some of the old buildings downtown, but most of all in the homes and churchs just outside the main city core. Mercer University is also something to behold.
To think I live an ~hour away and have never seen the place! I agree that mostly all of GA's second tier and smaller cities with the exception of Savannah and Athens have similar unmet potential.
