I ran into a waitress at a chain restaurant in northwestern Ontario. She started talking about New York City and how "safe" she felt walking all over the place, even at 2 or 3 in the morning. I'm sure she was roaming around Manhattan and not some sketchy Bronx neighborhood at that hour. But anyways, she went on to say how she did not feel that same feeling of safety walking around downtown Toronto. So yes, New York City has done a great job of reducing its homicide rate.....i guess that is what happens when a city becomes wealthier and more educated?

While I understand the premise, I'm not necessarily sure why she would feel that way given that there hasn't been a single homicide in downtown Toronto this year (except perhaps the Eaton Centre shooting which of course is not a regularity).

Canadians for some reason generally have the idea that downtown Toronto is a dangerous place, when the opposite is true.

man, philly having an even tougher year than chicago.

i guess that makes me feel slightly better about chicago, but it shouldn't, obviously: a lot of people are being killed for stupid reasons.

someone commented about cpd being taught that they can't rely on weather. i think we're also learning that jody weis (last superintendent, and from philly, i believe, just to put a bow on this) wasn't half bad.

Eh, Philly had an unusually tough January where more people were killed then usual. Recently Philly has slowed down tremendously and has only seen 4 murders in all of July so far. At this rate, Philly will be on pace to finish around the same as last year (324) if not, than slightly less.

Is that a little high for PDX? It's just weird to read the comments section about Portland being "business as usual," or something like that.

I'm not sure exactly about the numbers (although there seems to be a bit of a spike lately), but I think what you're reading is just more of the "suburbia scared white folk" crowd just assuming that all of Portland is a crime ridden wasteland.

Yes, it is. It seems to be a combination of a spike in domestic homicides along with some gang-related shootings. I suppose the only fortunate thing is that the domestic or quasi-domestic crimes tend to be solved very rapidly, in cases where the killer doesn't also commit suicide.

Man killed in in NE Portland gang shooting

Portland and Seattle are now both running way ahead of their murder totals at this point in 2011.

Denver Batman Shooting

14 12 dead, 50 injured in a shooting rampage at a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises.

Witnesses say someone threw smoke bombs or tear gas, put on a gas mask and opened fire. Apparently it was during a gunfight scene, so people first thought the gunfire and smoke were just special effects.

So many injured that police cars were used to transport injured. Police cars all now "bio-hazards" as back seats are full of blood.

Gunman entered emergency exit of theatre 9 at Century 16 Movie Theatres at the Aurora Town Center. Threw tear gas, opened fire with AR-15.

Wow... some nut thinks they're a Batman villain.. That's just awful.

I heard about this from a friend who lives in Colorado Springs early this morning - absolutely tragic. I hope that nut gets what's coming to him.

In other news, more youth gun violence in Chicago. Two 16-year-olds were shot and murdered between yesterday afternoon and this morning; that brings Chicago's July tally to 29.

I agree, but let's not politicize this thread.
