The Save Easy was expensive and a dump, so it's no surprise it had to change. I have not been into the No Frills.

I wonder if that neighborhood can support the typical new Sobeys.

I've been to the No Frills a couple of times and I would recommend it to anyone. It's clean and really does have lower prices.

No Frills are franchises and owner operator

both appear to have a marked upswing in customers
I wouldn't exactly call them a downgrade

Ive never been in a NoFrills. I always assumed (yeah i know ) that all they carried were "Store Branded" items like Presidents Choice and lacked the selection of a full service store. Hence "downgrade"

Maybe Ill have to stop in sometime .

A place for Hippie chicks that like expensive natural soaps "with a conscience" etc.

Should add, my GF loves the store... not a hippie though

This doesn't affect Halifax: http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/stor...e.html?cmp=rss

Here is an interesting map of what’s happening to the Zellers locations across the country: http://batchgeo.com/map/71e122394054...c0e757a9b82f8f

It appears all the stores not converting to Target or Wal-Mart are likely to close by March 2013 unless some other retailer wants them or converts them into additional mall space.

End of an era for sure. Im surprised Target didn't take over more locations in NS. How many Targets will there be.. 4? With 3 in Halifax IIRC. Not great for Nova Scotian consumers in the rest of the province who will end up losing ~10 Zellers let alone the employees who are losing their jobs.

Wal-Mart is buying a few locations as well, if I'm correct. Maybe some of these will be some of the others in NS? If not it's a shame. I really wish The Bay took off more than it did, witin and outside of Canada to have a GOOD Canadian department store.

According to this map of the 14 Zellers that used to be in Nova Scotia:

4 New Targets (3 in Halifax, 1 in Sydney)
3 New Walmarts (Cole Harbour, North Sydney, Greenwood)
5 Zellers may close (Truro, New Minas, New Glasgow, Yarmouth, and Bridgewater)
2 Zellers have already closed (Amherst already has, and Bayers Road closed out a few years ago).

The same is happening to New Brunswick and P.E.I.

Unfortunately it looks like 4 Northern New Brunswick Zellers may close along with a Fredericton, Moncton, and Summerside location.

It's unfortunate that these locations are not turning into Target.

I'm kinda surprised areas like Truro, New Minas, and even New Glasgow are not getting Target as they have been able to attract stores like Future Shop, Winners, Sport Chek and Home Depot recently.

Zellers is not Canadian:

Missed the quotes in my post, eh?

I'm well aware that they aren't Canadian NOW, however they sure used to be. Even with their current ownership, they are more "Canadian" than Walmart.

That fountain was there for over 40 years (since the mall opened in 1969?). It used to collect a lot of coins since people would make a wish and throw a coin into the fountain.

It looks like there are quite a few people in the mall.
