In a city addicted to spandrel glass, it's inconceivable it would not be used here.

Or, a shallow space behind clear glass with whitewall that could be washed with lighting from the interior. I didn't mean to suggest that I am a lover of spandrel glass panels (usually I am not), but I think it would have been a better choice over what we're getting for this situation.

That was exactly my point. If there was ever a place for spandrel glass, it would be here, if they are not going to open up the windows properly.

Although to be fair, it would have meant the Bay would have to redo the interiors near the windows all along the sections they had only recently renovated for the likes of Chanel and Coach. Since many of these former display windows (with display 'rooms') open directly into the store, it makes it an even more expensive overhaul.

They could also have replaced the flat cream paneling with window frames that had opaque sections of dark glass to at least have it come off with the right look, but alas, the renovations seem to be falling short of our high expectations in this respect.

The former Bay store in Victoria gives a hint of what it could have looked like with restored window height. See the photo at this article at Vibrant Victoria.
The leasing brochure suggested that Coach would have to move to allow installation of escalators to the basement levels - if the space is leased out.

I agree that spandrel panels would have been nice in the interim.

zellers is closing 3 stores in BC - well out of all the stores not becoming target or walmart 3 of them will just close - has anyone heard which ones? Oakridge won't become target apparently, how about lynne valley in north vancouver?

Zellers brand on path to extinction after HBC says it will close most of stores

edit: found an older story that says this - it does seem target will take over oakridge eventually... the story lists the locations opening for sure in 2013, more will come after that

Quote:
In its selection process, Target announced that it will also take over Zellers spaces at Oakridge Centre in Vancouver, Lynn Valley Centre in North Vancouver and Brentwood Mall in Burnaby as well as locations in Penticton, Prince Rupert, Salmon Arm and Dawson Creek. Opening dates for those stores have not yet been announced.

^According to the contractors Camper should be open mid August.

------

Meanwhile last monday a new home decor store called Notting Hill SW1 has opened @ 840 W Hastings in one of the heritage facades of Jameson House. The other side is still available.

Doesn't that give you a flashback to Richard Kidd when it opened in Gastown; a huge, gorgeous but mostly empty space with hardly any product in it. Their $/sq. ft sales must need to be huge to pay the rent in that space - much like Richard Kidd, which had to sell lots of $200 T-shirts.

There's not enough "rich kids" in this city to sustain stores with those demographics. My Closure Countdown estimate: January 2014

looks nice

as long as they get exclusive product it could do well, there are many home stores that have stuck around for years and its in a great location

Choices on Cambie is expanding southward into the two adjacent storefronts, displacing Flying Wedge and UPS which are moving elsewhere on the strip.
