old saint louis: a brief photographic interlude on a hot evening

SOULARD, named for antoine soulard (b. 1766 rochefort, france d. 1822 st. louis, usa), a surveyor for the spanish government and a refugee from the french revolution. as you may or may not know, st. louis was a french speaking spanish territorial capital longer than a french possession.

In fact, both Spain and France were ruled by the same family (the Bourbon dynasty) back then anyway. The linguistic aspect would be significant if only they still spoke French in Missouri like some do in Louisiana, as part of their local original culture. Being bilingual is an obvious plus.

Soulard probably didn't believe in the ideals of the Republic and remained faithful to the Bourbon monarchs. He would have met that kind of grim device during the revolutionary terror in France, for his political opinion.

Always nice to see the historic feeling over there. Of course, I wish you guys made sure little kids can speak French. Really, it's not so hard to learn for them flexible kids.

I never really noticed that, then again i'm not familar enough with the entire scope of toronto vernacular. that being said the way the power poles are strung around haphazardly in spots, and the brick and mansard roof stuff, i can totally see it based on what i've seen on here from toronto.

Too bad more cities don't have such a wonderful built environment and fabulous architecture. St. Louis is one of the best.
