Express your identity in pictures

In response to the thread about Canadians having/not having an identity...

I thought it might be fun if we all try to express our city, province, or country's identity.

I'm going to give it a shot with St. John's... all pictures are taken by me. But I'll never think of everything, lol...

Fresh seafood - fries, dressing, and gravy - Pineapple Crush

Significant divide between rich and poor...

Fishing and shipping - Isolation, closeness to Europe - More European than North American visitors and tourists

Best beers in the world...

The Newfoundland and Labrador dogs - our Puffins - Whales and icebergs

Towering hills - George Street clubbing - Rowdy weddings

Steep streets - Narrow lanes - Colourful houses

And an independent spirit...

"The pink, the Rose of England shows
The green, St. Patrick's emblem bright
While, in between, the spotless sheen
Of Andrew's Cross displays the white

So hail the pink, the white, the green
Our patriot flag, long may it stand
Our sirelands twine their emblems trine
To form the flag of Newfoundland."

And our old national anthem, which everyone still today knows the words to...

Video Link

"When sunrays crown thy pine-clad hills
And summer spreads her hand
When silvern voices tune thy rills
We love thee, smiling land
We love thee, we love thee, we love thee smiling land

As loved our fathers, so we love
Where once they stood, we stand
Their prayer we raise to Heaven above:
God guard thee, Newfoundland
God guard thee, God guard thee, God guard thee, Newfoundland"

^ That Legislature is awesome.

I have such jealousy for, literally, EVERY other's province's legislature. We should have joined Canada sooner. Since we only came on board in 1949, our legislature has 50s architecture. It looks like a glorified high school. Our old national parliament, the Colonial Building, is much nicer but smaller than the average house these days.

Asked around.

If you're in a city with a lot of Newfoundlanders, like Toronto or Calgary, you can get it in the Newfoundland section of the ethnic food aisle.

No joke.

One other thing that is part of our identity: our accents. Which also brings up my favourite story ever.

I was in Winnipeg, Manitoba, talking to a newly-made friend and this conversation happened:

Him: So, you're from Newfoundland?
Me: Yep.
Him: But you don't have an accent?
Me: Yeah, I do.
Him: Not really... not a strong one...
Me: Oh, give me a beer and it'll get stronger.
Him: Every Newfoundlander I've ever met has said that.
Him, totally serious and NOT making a joke: You know, maybe there is no Newfie accent. Maybe being drunk IS the Newfie accent?
I die of laughter and break out my phone to Facebook it.

Yes we have a awsome leg, but look at the historic building you have in St Johns, I always want to do a road trip out there as flying in you just don't get the feel of the land.

To me this is how I express my identity as a Canadian - based on the the fashion whims of some manky brit and the pursuit of a f@#cking water rat ...

The beaver, the fur trade and the canoe pretty much has influenced every bit of Canada ..... stick that it your pipe Johny Bull and smoke it!!

And IMHO, you ain't a true Canadian until you do something in a canoe! (and it ain't tipping!)
