Smile St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada

I took all of these photos this month (July, 2012). For those unfamiliar with the city, St. John's is generally recognized as the oldest city in North America.

It's a small city with fewer than 200,000 inhabitants (and that's including neighbouring cities such as Mount Pearl and Conception Bay South as well as suburban towns such as Paradise).

Architecturally, it's famous mainly for its stunning scenery and colourful buildings.

A view of the Basilica of St. John the Baptist and Military Road taken from the Newfoundland Hotel:

A coffee shop on Military Road:

The famous Battery neighbourhood. There isn't a lot of space here to build yet it's a very popular place for tourists to visit and for locals to hike (hence my username). It creates some funny scenes. One home even has the public walking trail cut right across its front patio:

The steep streets of downtown:

A view of downtown St. John's from Signal Hill:

And again, this time from the Shea Heights neighbourhood on the Southside Hills:

St. Patrick's Church. Strict heritage protection laws restrict the height of downtown buildings so this is still one of the tallest buildings in the city:

Prescott Street:

Duckworth Street:

A view of downtown from Southside Road:

The Rooms, our provincial museum/archives. It's meant to resemble the architecture of old fishing stages (If you're wondering why the buildings downhill look a little strange it's because you're seeing the backside of most of them. The red building in this photo is the same one as the red building in the "The city in fog" photo further below):

A nice art deco building downtown:

The hills are steep enough that, in many areas, the sidewalks and lanes are stairs:

The famous George Street stairs. This street is lined with dozens of pubs, bars, and nightclubs. A favourite destination for locals and visitors:

Bowring Park at the edge of downtown:

The fog rolling in past Cabot Tower:

The city in the fog:

And a few more, these taken with my cell phone rather than my camera. The sun breaking through the fog on Duckworth Street:

The steep streets of downtown:

A typical downtown residential street:

Part II:

The pink: the Rose of England shows;
Green: St. Patrick's Emblem bright;
While, in between, the spotless sheen
Of Andrew's Cross displays the white

So hail, the pink, the white, the green
Our patriot flag, long may it stand
Our sirelands twine their emblems trine
To form the Flag of Newfoundland."

Part III

Some peoples say that Quebec city is the oldest city in north America, some peoples say St-Johns. Finally, I don't give a shit and I enjoy how our two old and beautifull canadian cities are.

Thanks for this, very colourfull !

Thank you! :-D

I think both cities can claim it in different ways.

Quebec City was founded and built beginning in 1608. It's not complicated. St. John's is more complicated. It was first settled much earlier, potentially as early as the late 1400s, but only as a seasonal settlement where Europeans came for the fishing season then went back home.

So, was it a city? Not really... but it is older.

Makes sense to me. I wonder how many cities in total claim to be the oldest? By that I mean... they put it on their tourism brochures, etc., like St. John's and Quebec City.

I've heard of St. Augustine as the oldest continuously-inhabited city in North America.

hey, lets roll into the party and insult the host and then just walk out.

Anyway I'm a sucker for the east coast of Canada, thanks for sharing.

Very nice and colorful city. Thanks for the shots.

I´d like to visit it. It must be a very pleasant and quiet city. I like those houses in different colours.

Congrats and greetings from Madrid, Spain!

If you are somehow suggesting that I was trying to insult the photographer; think again. The pics were great and St John's is a lovely city even though it is not the oldest.

I could stare at photos of St. Johns all day. It makes me want to go back badly. It's the quintessential Canadian Maritime city (sorry Halifax); downright beautiful, urban, walkable, and historic. Thanks!

The Shea Heights photo makes me realize I need to actually head up that hill sometime.

I guess, if St. John's were actually in the Maritimes.

All in all, great thread! It's nice to see someone else posting photos of St. John's here (especially someone who probably knows the city much better than I, so I can keep some new angles in mind for when I get back in a month).
