Americas coolest cities.

I decided to make a thread on what SSP's opinion is on which cities are Americas coolest cities. Please vote for all the cities you think are cool.

Let's settle this once and for all.

I'm not sure how long this thread will last, but, can I ask what you're reasoning was for choosing the cities on the list?

Certainly there are cities I think are cool that are missing, but considering everyone will have different opinions, don't you think it's best just to post, say, the largest 25 or so metro areas and then let people choose the ones they feel are coolest? Otherwise you are arbitrarily already choosing for them.

I'll disclose that from this list I chose Chicago and New Orleans.

Ok. So this is a list of the cities you felt were the coolest, and we are supposed to choose from your list to define "America's coolest cities."

Ok.

I voted for every city on this list. Now that's cool*.

*cool being entirely subjective and in many cases ridiculous.

Next time we should do a list of the coolest forumers...and try to cram them in to a top 25.

In the polls, it seems that our 2 two iconic port cities are leading.

Given the choices, I had to go with New Orleans. Great food, entertainment, and dense urban neighborhoods.

For me, "cool" is more about hype and stereotypes, and often false stereotypes, so I just had some fun with this list.

New York - critical mass of everything, the default big city setting that instantly springs to mind

Los Angeles - critical mass of creative talent, the whole dream of moving out there and writing a screenplay to hit it big amidst the palm trees

Miami - sun, beaches, hot women, palm trees

San Francisco - critical mass of quirkiness, gorgeous landscapes

Seattle - angsty computer programmers chugging through coffee and listening to grunge in the rain

Portland - *pushes up hipster glasses*

Austin - clearly number one

New Orleans - too quirky to leave off the list

It's threads like this that make me realize what's really going on with this forum....
1) Most people on here have some interest in urban planning-type issues.
2) Because of #1, they're probably going to have strong opinions in favor of their city, or other cities (if they're stuck in places they don't want to live)
3) Because of #2, any perceived slight against a city could set off "pistols at dawn"-type situations.

Not that this means we should cease and desist. I voted for 9 cities myself. I'm sorry I didn't write in Omaha.

um, Denver.. an automatic contender on virtually every "cool city" list out there, isn't even on your list?

Regardless, this thread is doomed.

Hey, if DoubleL's intention was merely to have fun, then I really don't mind which cities he chooses. I guess I had a difficult time telling to what extent he was being serious.

I just wanted some reasoning as to why places like San Jose (which I'm sure has its cool aspects) made the cut, and places like Baltimore and Milwaukee didn't.

You and Koolmaudit's casual reference to Omaha seemed a little snide, especially considering I thought it would best to just list the top 25 largest cities to prevent the kind of whining that I'm doing right this moment. I mean hey, I've been on these forums for ten years, and I've lived outside Omaha for the last eight!

Strongly disagree.

For every buzz band from Denver, I can think of 100 from Brooklyn and Los Angeles.

I can't think of a significant international artist or art movement strongly associated with Denver.

I can't think of a single industry or business associates with Denver.

I can't think of a single culinary restaurant movement associated with Denver.

I can't think of a single architectural or urban design movement associates with Denver.

Mountains and snow are associates with Denver. But Alaska and California have higher mountains. Nevada had the most mountain ranges and had the title of the most mountainous state and the volcanoes of the PAC nw are considers the coolest mountains.

So what does Denver do that it can be considered as cool as NYC, LA and Chicago?
