Marion, Illinois

this summer i finally made it back to Southern Illinois for family reunions. i hadn't been in over a decade, before i really got into photography and urban appreciation so it was great to go back and explore the series of towns and small cities throughout the area.

part 1 is Marion, home to about 17,000 people. pictures were taken on a hot sunday; i have no idea what normal activity would be.

downtown. it was hot.

so they had to paint pictures of people on the buildings because the town has no actual people?

My memory of Marion is when my car broke down there on a Friday night during a cross country trip. I couldn't even get a mechanic to look at my car until the next Monday. So three nights in Marion with no car (not that it mattered anyway) at a bad motel with absolutely nothing to do.

I wish I could remember the random-arse Ohio town, but on vacant boarded up buildings, they painted lame silhouette scenes of what used to be going on in the building (like a diner scene, on the old diner windows).

Anyway, nice tour and thanks for sharing.

...

I see marion exhibits the 1 "tall" building feature (5 stories or more) prevalent in seemingly even the smallest of towns in Illinois, usually an old folks home.

You laugh at my misery. Not counting the four or five weekends that I ended up in the Travis County jail, that weekend in Marion was one of the worst three days of my life.

I spend A LOT of time in shitty motels in towns exactly like Marion in central/southern Illinois for work so I can imagine what that was like. Probably a solid half year of my entire life or something.

102 degrees!? no wonder the crops are dying & there's a drought. I'm not sure I get the Egyptian themes--the camel in the window for the summer strolls and Little Egypt Art Assn. Is Marion near Cairo, IL (probably a stupid question, regardless. Sorry!)? The Cultural center looks like it might hold some promise.

There's some odd stuff going on there. That painted lady is carrying a picture of Honest Abe.

uh, without looking this up, i think it was because southern illinois farmers supposedly supplied chicago with food during/after a particularly cold northern illinois growing season and it was likened to agriculture of the nile valley, or something.

"Little Egypt" is southern illinois' nickname. i had always assumed it earned the nickname from being along the continent's major rivers, ohio and mississippi, (similar to the nile) and also because of the native american mounds found in the area, like those at cahokia, are seen as america's version of the egyptian pyramids.

Doesn't look too bad, I've certainly seen worse. Gotta say that clock/bell tower is quite impressive. Thanks for the tour L.

You've had a number of nice sets this summer LSyd. Nice set, and I'm looking forward to more.

Cool tour. I've never really been south of Springfield, so it's good to see this part of my former state.
