Verrazano bridge has a $13 toll too (one way only). Lets propose a tunnel with a $6.50 each way toll and see how far that proposal goes...

I think Staten Island is a fair comparison because it's suburban single family homes, remote ,and has a great 24 hr ferry service that's free! The two ships are larger than the seabus and hold a lot more people. Staten Island is the most car friendly borough with only 18% of households without a car.

No one in their right mind would drive from Staten Island into NYC. Its $12. If you want to leave the island to go to Jersey its still $6. At least SI Residents get a break on tolls on pre-purchasing tokens but they have to be used in 30 days.

Now get this Verrazano Bridge serves both Staten Island and Brooklyn, but Brooklynites get no discount.

Was wondering something about personal opinion involving roads in Metro Vancouver. If you could pick a favorite road that you love driving which one would you choose? (Has to be a major arterial though)
Ever since I started working in Richmond (Garden City @ Blundell), I have really gained respect for it. The stereotype is true around Downtown Richmond, which is awful, but basically south of Granville, it is my favorite city to drive in. Traffic really flows smoothly, and the major arterials make driving the speed limit easy, so you never miss lights. They are timed perfectly.
My favorite road is Garden City/Granville/Railway. Flows great, and you make it from the 91 to Steveston in 10-15 minutes, even in rush hour.

Georgia and Dunsmuir are fun to drive some times. The green waves move at about 50km/h, so in light traffic you can often go from Beatty to Burrard without slowing down.

The only problem is that things tend to back up now that the bike lanes have reduced the turning lane capacities, so often you fall off the back of the timing wave. When it works its definitely quite amusing to ride the wave.

See that's where I noticed something in Richmond with 2 way traffic, during peak times. Afternoon rush everything flows South and West. So that being said, every single major arterial West (Blundell/Granville/Francis/Williams/Steveston) and South (5/4/garden city/3/gilbert/2/railway/1) flow incredibly well south of Granville. You get the green wave every single time. All the roads are spaced .5 miles apart, so at 60 km/h you can drive 2 miles in 5 minutes.
I know that all cities time their lights, but richmond is hands down the best from what I've seen. Except 3@Westminster. That is arguably the worst in Vancouver.

I could swear North Van times their lights so you get a red at each one unless you're going over 80km/h.

24th is going to be tough as they have allowed development to happen right up against the 24th Ave overpass. Only place where room has been left is behind the Best Buy for an on-ramp from 24th Westbound to Northbound 99.

16th makes sense as it is a major W-E route right into East Langley and a heavy truck route especially to get to Campbell Heights.

Too much traffic on the 24th Ave. overpass and too many traffic lights at each end.

Adding on-ramps would back up traffic on Hwy 99.

16th Ave. is the best locale for numerous reasons. It will also alleviate traffic on the 32nd Ave. interchange.

I assume, in conjunction with the 16th interchange, they're going to extend Croydon Dr from 20th to 16th?

Massey Tunnel replacement

Christy Clark told the mayors that the government wants to start talking about a replacement, but the goal is to complete the replacement by 10 years.

Not really Metro Vancouver material, but she also (re-)committed the government to finishing 4 lane TCH to the Alberta border.

So I was driving through Langley today and it seems that construction of the 192nd Robert's Bank highway 10 / rail overpass is well underway. They are already constructing some of the pillars.

Bunch of stuff in Langley, Surrey & Delta for improvements to Highway 99 and Highway 1.

Finally the truck climbing lane between 232 Street and 164 Street is being put in place on Eastbound Highway 1.

WOW... a new interchange in WR at 16th AVE & HWY 99. Still makes me so they didn't put a proper interchange in at 24th AVE!

Hey goleafsgo,
There's the truck passing lane you wanted!!! [LINK]
Quote:
In Langley, a new truck climbing lane will be added to Highway 1 between 232nd and 264th Streets to reduce congestion and increase safety. This third eastbound lane will provide additional room for transport trucks to merge and travel safely along this stretch of highway. In addition, as part of this project, the 248th Street overpass will be replaced with a new structure. Work is expected to begin in early 2013 and finish in the spring of 2014. This project was announced locally on Sept. 28th. The total estimated value of the project is $24 million.

While the truck climbing lane between 232nd and 264th is good news, the replacement of the 248th St. overpass of Hwy 1 between these two points is also of interest.

When 6 laning of Hwy 1 eventually makes its way out to Hwy 11, all of the overpasses will need to be rebuilt. So far Mt. Lehman, McCallum and Clearbrook overpasses/interchanges have been rebuilt to accommodate a future 3 +3 Hwy 1 cross-section. And now 248th is next in line.
