Just looking over the web cams and diagrams again, my goodness the Cape Horn Interchange is going to be a beast.

It will definitely be the most impressive interchange in Western Canada IMO. As well the #1 from Brunette to 152nd will be the most impressive stretch of highway in Western Canada.

Please, please, please tell me this is only temporary and the final product will be much better.
Just for kicks and you're complaining? FYI you're not double-backing almost to where you started, not by a long shot. If people are on the west end of United Blvd, they would just head over the King Edward overpass and either head toward Brunette to go west or Cape Horn to go east. And next time, just get onto Lougheed Hwy from Ikea and get onto Hwy 1 that way.

Yeah, well... I'm Canadian. We're allowed to complain about things like that!

Honestly, I'm just disappointed with the current design. Seems oddly circuitous and kinda ass-backwards. You're right in that I won't be taking that route again, but...

Global BC's Newshour top story tonight dealt with the Port Mann Bridge. Mike Proudfoot, CEO of Transportation Investment Corp., stated that the new Port Mann Bridge will be partially opened next month in September.

With the EB lanes on the new PMB already paved, I suspect that EB PMB traffic will be diverted along the new alignment. Things are obviously moving along pretty quickly.

The bridge can't open up EB and WB overnight I think. They have to shift EB over first, and then WB crosses over the then-former EB lanes.

September seems realistic to be honest. SFPR won't be done by then - I'm quite sure...

Not really surprised. What about tolling, though?

If Global BC's report is to be believed then it seems the prediction I made back in May is at least partially true. They say tolling will begin in December as scheduled and they will likely be offering an introductory rate.

They can't open the new bridge without lighting. Has any lighting been installed yet?

I see lighting on the south approach, but don't see any on the actual bridge yet. As for the north approach, well there is no webcams facing that way.

Light posts have been installed on the curving bridge deck at the south end, but I don't see any on the part that is suspended by cables.

There are also light standards partially on the west side of the north approach, from about when the elevated section starts at United Blvd to about half way to the actual bridge deck, so it's in progress. And as Zassk said for the south approach, light standards on the elevated section up to the bridge deck on both sides. I expect that once they get the actual median up when they can open up the full 10 lanes, there will be median light standards as well.

In a month (or so), you'll be driving over the new bridge heading eastbound! Wonder if that's why they've finished most of Surrey/Langley off, so there can be additional capacity right away when they switch over the lanes (without tolling)

I wonder if they'll continue to force us into 2 lanes westbound with those 3 empty lanes on the existing structure, or open up another lane there as well. Seems they could start the HOV on the Surrey side or provide a direct Surrey-Coquitlam lane over the existing bridge once the eastbound traffic is diverted.

Maybe we're secretly getting a 15-lane crossing, with the centre 5 lanes being rush-hour reversible

RE: Tom_g... I've actually thought that too, and it might be feasible, although I wonder how much effort would be required and if it's just easier to switch all the lanes over the new bridge ASAP than temporarily convert 1-2 more lanes on the Old Port Mann for a month or two.

The question would be whether the old bridge would be structurally sound enough to use a couple of lanes on it while it is being demolished to create room for the lanes to be added to the new bridge.

A 15-lane bridge doesn't do much good when it's fed by 8 lanes on each side.

Remember, we're essentially getting a NEW 4-lane bridge for hwy #1 connecting NOF to SOF and a 6-lane bridge to replace the Port Mann and connect Coquitlam and Surrey.

This 10-lane span will NOT have double the "real" capacity of the old Port Mann, as it will depend on traffic patterns and where people are going. It's entirely possible that there will be congestion on part of the bridge. It will be interesting to see how traffic patterns develop.
