Nectarines were $1.59/lb and they're not even on the shelves at Safeway. They also have free-range and grass-fed meats- they just got a load of free-range chickens, whole birds that enjoyed life eating bugs and doing their chickeny things.

I love, love, love these guys and there was an actual lineup today albeit one was a girl buying a single apple
Sounds like a mini Trader Joes, one of my favourite American stores. Will check it out this weekend.

Except without all of the marginal prepared foods and BS packaging on the fruits and vegetables.

Rusty, I just read through your blog post on St. John's. Looks like I really need to try out Rocket; a couple friends have made it a regular hangout, so I really have no excuse not to. Also, I'll have to double check, but I think I might know the brother of one of the Fixed guys (I know the location, and I think that's where they were opening). If it is the same place, I'm told they were planning on getting bottles of Unibroue stuff as well for later in the evenings.

Then I followed links to your photos and saw that you were at Ches's as well (Leo's, just a few doors down is much better, btw). I can see Ches's from my front step!

My sisters are coming to visit and they want to go out for an Indian dinner. I feel overwhelmed with the choices available so I was wondering if there was one Indian restaurant that stood out from the crowd? They have been to Raj Doot, Taj Mahal, Moti Mahal, and Maurya on past visits but I would like to impress them with something different. Any ideas?
All my sister in California misses about Canada is Swiss Chalet, so we'll be going there, and Habitant pea soup which she will be hauling a suitcase load home.

Went and checked out Old School Emporium. Very nice. The produce prices are excellent -it also has a nice selection of specialty type food.

I really like Raj Palace on 6th Ave. Its small compared to others but really good compared to most places I have been. When I was working DT it was a regular spot.

Went yesterday, between there and Shopper's I don't think we'll need to go to Co-op for anything! Stoked that they've opened up, everything we picked up was excellent, just finished steaks from there, definitely some of the best steaks that we've had.

Thanks Malcolm and ZeDgE for the suggestions. I haven't been to Mango Shiva or Raj Palace, but I have dined at the predecessor of RP, Mysore Palace, several times.

What about Rasoi in Marda Loop? Has anyone been there recently? I was there when it first opened and I liked it but I have never been back. I guess if they are still in business they must be pleasing people with their food?

It's not your traditional Indian restaurant (in fact it's Indian Sri Lankan) and the ambiance is lacking but the food is outstanding and the staff are very helpful! Check out the Canada Dosa Corner. They have some curries as well but the dosa are oustanding!

Couple things to mention. It's not fast, I believe that the owner and her husband along with a sister run the place. So if you enter and nobody is at the front dest it's worthwhile to call into the kitchen. The portions are large which makes it a great value! But it is certainly worth the wait and the food is fresh and made to order which makes it all worthwhile.

With all this talk, I am going this weekend for sure!

Pretty cool review with a great story about the owner:

Nawab (across from Telus, sort of next to The Bow) is a little spendy, but it's a nice space and the food is awesome. I impressed a visiting colleague there a couple of months ago.

Edit: But Urbanspoon lists them as permanently closed. Damnit.

Went to Old School Emporium and bought some meat today. The place is decent, the staff are super friendly.

I am always a little wary of "no-antibiotic" produce and meats, or "pesticide free" produce. I am probably one of the few who doesn't really buy into the SOLE (sustainable, local, organic, ethical) food movement, so any negative reaction to the place should be viewed in that regard. If you are all about organic, local food, I suggest you try the place out.

Calgary related, the Chief Chiniki restaurant on highway 1 west of the city burned down overnight. I never ate there, but it was always a landmark of sorts for me on that highway.

You're not the only one that doesn't. If everyone ate organic the forests would all be razed to have enough cropland to produce it....

Yup. Plus carbon emissions from food would drastically increase if we all ate local, many more people would die from food-borne diseases, our nutritional intake would decrease, farmers in developing countries would suffer and we would all spend more time and money on food.
