/\ Great stuff. More bike infrastructure is needed, especially on Whyte. If you have a minute, please fill out that survey after the link.

I was just wondering if they have started the next faze of Mayfair yet. I am hoping that with all the negative responses to the change in design that maybe they will cancel the next tower and maybe put the land up so sale . It is likely just wishful thinking on my part ,but i would rather see an empty lot then the crap they now want to build. Even a park would be nice on that corner.

Heard today that the J22 project may be moving faster on the tower portion than previously thought. Good news!

You know what is interesting? As per the PC election promise:
http://www.votepc.ca/admin/contentx/...d=2455&r=10187

A Progressive Conservative government will enhance post-secondary facilities across the province through a new three-year $650 million capital project funding commitment.

"This province's post-secondary institutions have strong and innovative visions for the future and the PC party is proud to support that vision. This promise represents a real investment that will support the student population for years to come."

"Each one of the five projects will greatly enhance each institution's unique teaching capabilities and will ensure that Alberta's post-secondary facilities maintain their competitiveness and uphold their exemplary reputations."

The funding allocated to NAIT will enable them to replace a costly, aging building and will facilitate the institution's pursuit to produce more skilled people in the trades, technology and health care sectors. NorQuest College will be able to fulfill its vision to consolidate services to a single campus. Lethbridge College will educate students through its high caliber Trades and Technology Renewal and Innovation Project. The University of Calgary will be able to expand the Schulich School of Engineering, and Mount Royal University will invest in their library and learning centre.

"An investment in Alberta's post-secondary infrastructure is an investment in Alberta's future. By providing the necessary facilities and expanding capacity, we can ensure Albertans are ready to meet our economies demand for skilled labour as part of a world-class workforce."

"This new investment aligns with the existing PC commitment for developing our post-secondary infrastructure. Over the past six years, a Progressive Conservative government has invested an estimated $3 billion into a number of post-secondary projects."

"The PC party is choosing to make investments in education at every level. Alberta is home to some of the best and brightest minds and has created industry-leading technology. The funding to create these facilities will harbor further innovation and aide Albertans to reach their full potential."

However, looking at the 2012-2015 fiscal plan and budget, there is NO mention what-so-ever of either Norquest or NAIT funding for Capital Projects. In fact, there is not financial documentation at all that sets out funding for these projects.

It is starting to look like it was a desperate attempt to grab a large number of votes from those associated with these two institutions. Hopefully I am wrong.
I have emailed the GOA three weeks ago with no response. If you would like to make your own inquiry:

Aren't all of the spending promises made by the PC party all just "if there is enough of a surplus"?

For schools, the promise is hard and fast - we need them for the growing student population.

For both schools and post secondary, I expect the first you'll see of some of them is in the spring budget's capital plan. (since Capital planning is a 3 year cycle, you additionally likely won't see some of the projects until the 2014 Budget) The Capital Plan is a document that can only be amended in the house, and the campaign was after the budget.

And where did you email? The Departments can only respond to things that are government approved and passed plans, not projects that are still in process but not announced (a campaign news release does not equal a Government News Release in the eyes of the bureaucracy. Email your MLA, the Premier, or a responsible Minister and you should get a response. Be mindful that it is also August.

In the press release election promise, there was no mention of it being paid for by surplus. If that was the case, they could propose everything with the "surplus" caveat.
NAIT is falling apart. Ironically, the Architectural Technologies programs operates out of a converted sears department store.
NAIT turns 50 in October. Maybe that is a good time for a (second) announcement.

^Incidently, SAIT is looking pretty stellar with its capital improvements over the last 7 years or so.

Wasn't budget 2012 passed before the election? Therefore any new promises made during the election wouldn't have been in the budget... ?

Investment firm buys Edmonton building

Edmonton Journal

Wednesday, August 22, 2012

Crestpoint Real Estate Investments Ltd. has acquired a six-storey office building in Edmonton in a deal it values at more than $24 million.

Crestpoint, part of the Connor, Clark and Lunn financial group, says the purchase of the 92,500squarefoot West Chambers Building follows the company's strategy of diversifying its real estate portfolio.

Crestpoint provides institutional and high-net-worth investors with direct access to Canadian commercial real estate assets.
