Updated renderings of Belmont Red Line TOD. 33 units, Retail on Ground Floor. NO PARKING. Replacing vacant lot and old 3-story building. Cafe setback along west side is necessary for CTA easement/access.

I kind of wish they'd bought out Al's Beef next door and put in like a 12-story tower for a larger hotel.

They are going before Central Lake View Neighbors on Wednesday and on to the Zoning Board after that.

I would love to see the old Einstein Bros building torn down, and something cool put in there (like a Flatiron type building) that holds the corner appropriately.

im probably alone in this but i love old fire escapes on the fronts of buildings. they make a little nice spot to sit and have a cup of coffee and take in the city if youre not fortunate enough to have a balcony too

A nice place to contract tetnaus too.

Honestly no architect every thought slapping a fire escape on the front of a building was an improvement because it never has been. They are cool to see in alleys or whatever, but totally obsolete and rickety maintenance nightmeres otherwise. I say this as someone who owns a building with a non-mechanical fire escape.

What are you talking about? I'm talking about the Al's Beef on SE corner of Ohio and Wells, next to that 60-room hotel.

Fire escapes on the fronts of buildings are for cities with no alleys.

^ I own a 6 flat in Bucktown with a beautiful front fire escape. Yeah it's a clunker that will probably present as a maintenance headache, but it's a historic and cool feature and I can't help but be proud of it

lots of infrastructure can take on its own beauty, even if it wasnt the original intention. look at the newfound appreciation of old water tanks as another good example, or remnants of cobblestone, or old railroad tracks still embedded in pavement in downtown neighborhoods, or obsolete lift bridges still kept around. does everything have to have such a purist standpoint?

and these sorts of little touches are things that enhance the visual texture of our city compared to more generic modern areas. theres actual history that has taken place here and you can see it for yourself.

West Loop Could Get New Library At Old Coyne College Site, Burnett Says

At the request of residents, a Near West Side alderman is now planning to build a public library in the West Loop.

Ald. Walter Burnett Jr. (27th) is working with prominent West Loop developer Sterling Bay to put a public library branch in a proposed development on the old Coyne College campus in Fulton Market. Burnett plans to use Neighborhood Opportunity Fund money earmarked for West Loop improvements to help pay for the project, the veteran alderman told DNAinfo Chicago this week.

Not sure about the location...something like the H2O site might be better - closer to the park, more residential, and might help sell that development to the neighborhood NIMBYs.

The existing building already has one off of Morgan, and presumably they can repurpose that one into the new development without needing re-approval from CDOT.

There is green mesh fencing around the 676 N Lasalle parking lot as of yesterday. Parking lot is empty. Planters on sidewalk were removed a week ago. Construction must be imminent.
