I mean, shouldn't we dream big? People are always saying that things just can't work here because of blah blah blah. I don't care. It's like people don't want Manitoba and winnipeg to become great. They say it can't happen. I am asking why not? Let's dream a little, look at other places and what they do well and integrate it here. Regional transit might very well be a good solution here some day sooner than you think. This made in Manitoba thing just doesn't work in 90 percent of cases.

There is (or was) a private bus to Steinbach - not sure if it still exists.

Detroit QLine Streetcar

Detroit MI just opened a short (phase 1) streetcar line along Woodward Ave.

Parts of it were financed by private industry. The original plan was for light rail. But when the BRT folk promoted their plan, private invstors stepped forward to finance the QLine (M-1 Rail).

I just found out about this on the Funct. Transit Wpg. facebook group.

If Winnipeg were to build a streetcar like this one, which Winnipeg-area companies could help pay for it, instead of relying on government, who seems to want a bus-only solution?

Investors Group-Great West Life, True North, others?

Smart business owners that know it will bring people to their businesses. Fare is $1.50 for 3 hours! Passes are cheap!

"Most of the money comes from private and philanthropic groups, but $37.2 million comes from federal grants and millions more come from state and county government sources."

So that leaves Winnipeg with absolutely no excuse not to build a proper LRT line. If we're going to complete Phase II of the BRT, we may as well do it right, and reroute it, going down the CPR line, instead of the "dog leg" route they have planned. God, they have been discussing this route for 30 years, and they manage to screw it up....

Street cars aren't very good. Slow, stuck on the track. Buses are better.

Wow, for $150 you could likely get a flight out of Detroit to someplace else...

Well, I guess if street cars weren't any good, Toronto would have given up on 'em decades ago and replaced them with buses.

Same thing goes for other cities who have installed 21st century streecars / trams around the world.

Winnipeg should have been no different.

There street car line is slow, stuck on the track. I've ridden it. Might as well go with a bus.

I don't see the point in streetcars that don't have an exclusive ROW. The Spadina one makes sense, but the rest? It's like a bus that can't change lanes to get around blockages in traffic.

If, IF, Winnipeg ever gets away from buses, go with LRT on dedicated ROW. No street cars.

Like Esqurie said, why would you go with on street. This isn't Europe.

Because we "need to compete" with Calgary.

I would rather buses with a dedicated ROW.

The problem with LRT is that most people still need to transfer to a bus after getting off the LRT. Sometimes there is a bus trip required on both ends of the LRT ride.

The BRT is far more flexible.

That flexibility is actually a bug, not a feature. Means longer trips if you include waiting time, and while it supports transit numbers among commuters, doesn't enable people as well to choose to not own a car. Transferring between trunk routes is way better than waiting for a direct route.

While practically speaking this is true, LET has a certain sex appeal to it that seems to make it more attractive to use. Besides. Keeping busses for more local routes doesn't seem like a bad idea. It would encourage greater densification adjacent to the LRT. If you funnel commuters onto several large LRT lines it could make the whole system more efficient

No..

Right now, Winnipeg does not need LRT. I think buses are the way to go. They can come and go from the transitway. No need to get off the bus to get on a train. I see that as a big plus.

Why trains? because they're cool and everyone else has a train? I'd love to have a sweeet subway or LRT system. I've love to dream big. But we don't have enough money. It really is that simple.

Anyways, that's my opinion I guess. Everyone's entitled to their own. The Cities made their decisions and I don't want to get into a drawn out debate on this. At least the BRT system is designed to handle LRT dimensions. Will it ever get converted, who knows.
