Traffic Advisory: Tulane Avenue and Common Street

OCTOBER 16, 2017
NEW ORLEANS — The Department of Public Works roadway striping contractor is currently re-striping Tulane Avenue between S. Rampart Street and S. Claiborne Avenue, and Common Street between Baronne and S. Rampart Streets. The striping work is anticipated to last approximately two weeks. This project will improve bicycle and pedestrian connections between downtown destinations and the recently-renovated portion of Tulane Avenue, which now includes a widened neutral ground and bike lanes.

This nine block project will reconfigure Tulane Avenue to include protected bike lanes, high-visibility crosswalks, and new roadway striping. In the riverbound direction, the project will create two blocks of protected bike lanes and four blocks of conventional bike lanes on Tulane Avenue. In the lakebound direction, the project will add two one-block sections of protected bike lanes on Common Street as well as six blocks of protected bike lanes on Tulane Avenue.

The project will also add several high-visibility crosswalks along Tulane Avenue, and will refresh lane lines, edge lines, parking lines, and turn lane lines.

These improvements are being implemented under the City’s Complete Streets Program which was established in July 2016 and supports the City’s recently released Climate Action Plan, which calls for reducing car dependency by half by 2030.

The City will minimize impacts to roadway users and adjacent buildings as much as possible. Roadway users can expect to see striping crews on site and should exercise caution during construction activities by reducing speeds. Users can expect temporary travel lane shifts and restricted parking during this time.

New Orleans’ bicycling user rates are among the highest in the nation for major U.S. cities. In January 2017, the City of New Orleans was accepted into the People for Bikes’ “The Big Jump Project.” As one of ten communities nationwide, the City will receive technical assistance over the next three years to implement low stress bike networks in the City’s downtown core and adjacent neighborhoods.

Located within the Picayune Place historic neighborhood of New Orleans’ Central Business District, the Magazine Street Residence is a contemporary intervention situated on a vacant site in the heart of the city. At the front of the site, the majority of the original 1854 facade still stands as the only remnant of a fire which occurred over 20 years ago. The facade maintains the texture and scale of the historic “Banker’s Row” stretch of Magazine Street.
The design of the residence is centered on creating a place of quiet contemplation and repose in a city filled with excess and revelry. The house itself is a simple parti of a cast-in-place concrete box which is spaced back from a monumental weathered steel sculpture wall. The large steel panels form the backdrop for the interior of the house informing the relationship between inside and out, natural light and shadow. The material palette is limited to museum-quality concrete, glass and steel which enhances the quality of natural light reflected into the house.

The design references and aligns with the historic datums of the original site. The new steel panels align with the original four-story 60’ building height, the top of the new building aligns with the remnant facade on Magazine Street, and the building’s plan aligns with and is mirrored about the original subdivision of the site.

Do you know who's doing this? Private residence? Looks very world class, like Tadoa Ando would do it.

The lot is owned by Trey Trahan. I assume this project will remain unrealized and the the firm was only looking to add some fresh design work to their portfolio.

It would be nice to see it built though!
