Take a gander at the lobby in 1932.

Can you imagine living in an era when an animal hospital looked like that!!

More photographs HERE

I'm curious to see what the lobby looks like now.

Does anyone have a sick dog?

Have we seen the Daily Mirror's run down on 940 Highland on the thread before?

She relates this info from a 1990 permit, "the first floor will see demolition and reconstruction for offices".

The last veterinary practice moved out in 1986.

Interesting that the neon Dalmatian wasn't added to the 1929 building until 1959 (although there was apparently some other dog up there).

RE listing here

...briefly back to Dementia.

Towards the beginning of the chase there's a shot of a store sign that is reversed. (the signs are correct in all the other scenes)

youtube at 37:37

Do you think the film editor reversed the negative so she's running in the right direction?

I just saw this on ebay.

"35mm Slide LA Street Scene 1964 Cars Los Angeles"

ebay

If the tourist had aimed their camera and bit more to the right ---> we would have had a good view of Martz Flats.

in 1965, a year after the slide

I don't recall seeing this photograph before.

"RKO-Pathe Studio set, located on the old Ince/DeMille lot in Culver City in 1929."

lapl

I think the sets might have been for the movie 'Girl of the Port'. (just an ethereal guess)

"Jim, a British Lord, suffers from pyrophobia, a fear of fire. Unable to cope with his condition, he flees civilization, coming to rest in the island paradise of Suva, in Fiji. "

Historical note:

The famous surfer Duke Kahanamoku appears in the film.

Two Olympic gold medal swimmers were competing for the lead role in the first Tarzan series. Johnny Weissmuller won the part, but the younger, more classically handsome runner up, Buster Crabbe would go on to a more lucrative and varied career. With such an angelic face, it's no wonder.

Thanks for the follow-up on Duke Kahanamoku, CBD and odinthor. I appreciate it.

The "girl" in 'Girl of the Port' was Sally O'Neil.

"For Andrew, with a 'shamrock' full of luck, from Sally O'neil." (free lunch for anyone who can figure out what is written inside the shamrock)

IMDB

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the character that was afraid of fire so he moved to Fiji?? (did he think there wasn't any fire in Fiji )

Buster Crabbe did eventually star in one 12-part Tarzan serial, released in 1933 and later re-cut and released as a feature. Wikipedia has a poster for episode 12 which is a classic. Crabbe has to have been the most boyish Tarzan ever:

Recut and released as "Tarzan the Fearless," The Crabbe Tarzan (almost certainly stunt doubles) featured aerial stunts that boggle the mind. Compared to Weismuller's restrained vine-swinging, the swings here are truly breathtaking. I guess, during the Depression. You could get acrobats to take genuinely insane risks.

Have a fear of fire? Sit back, relax and have a special drink:

Up In Flames

2 parts Maker’s 46
¾ part lemon juice
¾ part grilled peach sherbet*
2-3 mint leaves for garnish

Shake all ingredients with ice and strain into a rocks glass. Garnish with mint leaves and top off the drink by flaming ground cinnamon.

I like mine without alcohol so substitute the Maker's 46 with a fruit juice of your choice.

To make peach sherbet recipe: Grill 2-3 peaches, until nicely charred. Mix the peaches in a blender with a roughly equal amount of white sugar and strain.

facebook

"A 15-mile visibility could be seen with no smog in sight. The city had recently changed the home incinerator burning hours from morning to evening."

note that one of the arrows is missing a description. anyone know what it's pointing to?

Quick question...

When did Los Angeles go from white paint to yellow on the street centerlines? Thanks.
