In a sort of abstract way, the vertical lines of the entrance resemble curtains surrounding a stage.

I saw a countdown clock last night for what I presume is demolition of the building. It was placed over a sign that said "This structure erected in 1927 - to be demolished 2017". The countdown clock had just under six days left.

The site is/was an appropriately name art venue called "The Demo Gallery". They lasted longer than they originally expected. This would explain why there were permits being filed to fix up the building at the same time permits were being filed to demo it for The Avenue. Mystery solved.

Thats pretty cool. Although I'm excited for demolition and for construction to begin. I think this building is really great, and can't get here fast enough. Plus it doesn't take up an entire city block (a la Fairmont)!

It's interesting that there are windows on the south wide of the building. I guess they have assurances that the state and paramount theaters will never be torn down and re-developed into high-rises which makes sense.

Over 300' tall and ~43' wide--bring it!! I'm hearing it will break in Q1 of '18--can't come fast enough.

I don't get the feeling that this one is going to start any time soon. Four "commercial remodel" permits for 721 Congress were approved today. They are all for "Add 3 hour Separation Wall." I have no idea WTH that is. But it doesn't sound like it's related to a demolition.

Here's one of them:

3 hour separation walls are for fireproofing. It effectively means that the wall will not burn through in less than 3 hours during a typical fire event. Why would you fireproof a wall you were going to demolish? Unless this wall will be shared with the neighboring building and they are reinforcing it prior to construction. Can't tell without seeing the plans.

There are Models on the north side of the building. Something to do with that?
I really like this project and hope it happens.

I noticed they reset the demo countdown clock and it now says 17 days plus a few hours until demolition.

According to the Demo Gallery's social media comments, their last event before Demo ended Thanksgiving weekend (11/25).

That would be a Sunday and New Years Eve. We'll see about that. But I never noticed until recently based on the permit filings that Nelsen is also the developer and not just the architect. So I suspect the office space in the project is for them. Their current office is just two blocks down the street.

Maybe this is the reason for the Demo delay. According to this permit filed last week the city meter at 721 Congress needs to be disconnected before Demo, but 719 Congress also uses the same city meter. So another meter needs to be installed at 719 Congress before the 721 Congress meter can be disconnected. C'mon guys, lets get this done already.

Yeah, before the FAA has something to say about the height.

Such a pity about 3rd & Colorado Residential. That's quite the grouping there around Congress & Colorado on the south end of downtown.

That tower at 5th & Brazos is a chameleon when it comes to height. 504 feet was the tallest we saw it listed at, but that seems to be a little taller.
