One Vanderbilt, so impressive . .
a big meaty complex steel skyscraper skeleton materializing . .
massive chunks of rusting red steel joints . .
irrevocable brute bare bones rudely rising,
smacking strident shape of serious raw force . .
to crack open the sky . .
staggering, rambunctious . .

Nothing any tenant of this building does will ever be as cool as what the people building it will do. This is the tragedy of architecture.

It's interesting to me that the city proceeded with rezoning despite protests from residents that the influx of office staff would damage the vibe of the neighborhood. This is NYC. I am not sure how any claim to damage like that can be made.

It can’t. Midtown East has been predominantly an office district for close to a century now, if not longer, so to claim that office workers would change the character of the area is absolutely absurd—almost delusional. It’s good to see that the city recognized that and went ahead with the rezoning.

Neat to see the base take more shape. You really need to be standing right in front of the structure to appreciate its size and scale.

Does it have a concrete core?

If not, then it begs the question of why we have not learn anything from the Twin Towers?

This statement is very true for this building.

steel first method. For an example, see the construction of 1 WTC. We never saw its concrete core once during construction after the tower rose above the base. And obviously 1 WTC had its concrete bunker base whereas this tower will have a more graceful, glass and terracotta enclosed base.
